Random thoughts

As a great lover of the random, I have to hand it to the Amish religion.

What are those guys up to? I will say right up front I don't have a detailed knowledge of their thing, but I feel on solid ground in saying they base their lifestyle on the idea that certain technological progress is bad. They don't drive cars. I don't think they spend a lot of time surfing the internet.

We have an Amish supplier at my current workplace and I was told this week they have a phone but not a fax.

And you see them building those barns and it is all done by hand. Are they actually against electricity? I dunno, maybe, sort of. sometimes.

So they are against modern technology - yet they use many technologies which would be seen as magic by people in the early 1800's. I wonder if they have some actual statement of the rules. I wonder what that would look like.

Something like this maybe?

God only approves of the level of technological advancement that existed between the years 1846 and 1903 and that's how He wants people to live and everything else is NO GOOD!

The Amish - Heroes of the Random.

I'm fascinated by Mennonites here in Ontario. The GF has family scattered across the North and I drive past a handful of horse-drawn buggies every time we're in the area. Very friendly group of people it seems, they smile and wave at you every time.

Turns out there are different groups and different levels of strictness between them. In more relaxed groups the telephone is seen as indispensable to do business with the rest of the world, but you're still not allowed to keep one *inside* your main house, it has to be hidden in a shed somewhere. Certain groups even allow cars, but only black ones.

It's all premised on the notion that plainness is a virtue, but I don't think that they have a clear Text that lays out the rules, hence the rather large number of sub-denominations out there.

It all seems so harmless, yet even more pointless.

We have some close family friends in Ohio that are from the German Baptist Church (Dunkards, Amish) and I went to school with many kids that were in that religion. I am still confused as to what is allowed and what is not. This Spring they invited us to their house for dinner and I learned a little bit more about them.
First off, they are some of the nicest people I have ever met in my life. Each person that I have dealt with have been extremely pleasant upbeat people. I know there are different factions and levels of the Church which mandate stricter applications of the rules. The ones that I know are able to have cars, TV's, and cell phones. The women wear long denim dresses and bonnets while most of the men have long beards. Right now there is a big division amongst the religious about the use of the internet and email. The group that I know, rely on crops such as beans and corn as their livelihood. They have very large families raised to help around the house.

There is another faction in Ohio that are still using horse and buggy. They live in a place called Amishville and attract people to their town and sell their homemade food and give you insight into their "simple life." I have not been there, but my mom always brings back the best apple butter from there. Alright, I have provided my experience on the Amish.

Actually the suppliers I was talking about may be Mennonites, not Amish. Sorry if I offended anyone.

I understand that a big part of the thing is to not be competitive with each other. So they feel that technology might lead people to try to out-produce each other in business or on their farms or whatever. And I guess they don't trust each other to live with current technology but still be cool and stick with the non-competitive program. So they force artificial constraints on themselves.

Artificial RANDOM constraints.

I imagine they just keep changing the rules as they become inconvenient like all religions. Christians were merrily torturing and killing people for saying the universe doesn't revolve around the earth - because that was the will of god - but when science developed to the point where they looked just too damn foolish in polite company - they went ahead and changed the will of god.

I imagine Amish/Mennonites are the same. This Amish Steel Fabricator we deal with probably wouldn't have used a phone at one time but then at some point they probably thought, well, there is non-competitive and there is non-competitive. We already use a bunch of somewhat technological stuff to do our metallurgy . . .

Like, let's not be complete dolts about this. Let's get in touch with Bell.

I see they don't have a website. Yet.

Oh, oh, and I almost forgot. Ahh, I'm also gonna need you to come in on Sunday and just go ahead and change the will of God, okay? That would be terrific.

dont have 1st hand knowledge but have talked to carpenters from the Amish region.
according to them the Amish use generators for power when building houses, etc..

so IMO (wally) the Amish omit modern technology when its convenient for them

So I have listened to the latest Muse CD a handful of times since it's release early this month and I have come to the conclusion that it is my least favorite of the 6 Muse studio albums. By a fair bit really.

There are some songs I like a lot but there is one I actively dislike and another couple that I have an impulse to skip past when they start up. Then there are a couple more still that I don't mind listening to but something feels incomplete to me. I haven't had any negativity like that with any of the previous CD's. (But then as I say, there is a good bunch of songs I really like).

I don't usually think about ratings for CD's but the first 5 would probably all be 9. I don't have any thoughts about any being better or worse than another. They are highly rated and consistent and I love them all. So much so I actually got off my butt and went and saw Muse live last year.

But this new CD, The Second Law, I'm thinking more like 6.8

I'm moving this week, like an idiot. I hate moving. I have a sore throat that I'm fairly certain is strep. I also have to do a half marathon on Saturday. Awesome timing for everything.

Some guy knocked on my door yesterday and claimed he was from the cable company. He came to get my cable box and modem. I gave him that and a check. Then, like the idiot I am (see the theme?), he tells me he needs a large check. I write the check and then realize that it wasn't how much the company said was due. I guess I'll be putting a stop payment on the check.
