I was pondering today this issue of how I speak around black people, and I was trying to think of what black people I have in my life at the moment. There have been times in the past when I have had quite a few but I could only think of 1 at the moment that I have more than a say-hello-in-passing relationship with: my boss when I am working with the Engineering Dept.

'Huh, I guess that's it,' I finally decided and went on with my day. It was, like, half a day later it occurred to me that my best buddy's wife is black. She is my buddy too. I have known her for 10+ years and have spent tons of time with her. And she's black. Didn't occur to me for half a day. Her son - my buddy's step-son - is also black.

I think I am so not racist that sometimes I can't even think in those terms when I try. The color of her skin is so unimportant that it doesn't even register.

It's kind of wonderful when you think about it.

I'm sure that it will be a quick death. I'm supposed to go on a 9 mile walk tomorrow. If I'm not heard from tomorrow afternoon, check Forsyth Park. I'll probably be skinned and used as a blanket by a homeless guy.
