Random thoughts

I have to say, I have never been much of a fan of The Doors. They were always somewhat popular with my various party crowds during and after high school - but I just never quite bought in.

It was one of those things. When their music got put on, I tolerated it but mainly wanted it to end so we could get to something else. Certainly I never bought a Doors record.

But I have been finding in the last couple years my respect for The Doors has increased. Their sound is still not my favorite thing and I don't feel a burning need to own any Doors CD's but I would say now that I like The Doors.

What I was saying a minute ago about The Doors. Same thing applies to Led Zeppelin. Well except I kind of know why I didn't like The Doors. They have a distinctive sound which either you like or you don't.

I have no idea what I didn't like about Led Zeppelin. It is a pretty standard rock sound that compares to lots of things I liked.

Anyway, I respect them now and would say I like them.

The Eagles belong in the conversation. I didn't like them. Yet there is nothing in their sound that doesn't compare to someone I really like. One of my own recordings was recently compared to The Eagles - and I can see why. Acoustic guitar, vocal harmony, easy feel. Those are things I like.

But I didn't like The Eagles. To be honest, I still am only so-so on The Eagles. Can't explain it.

The Doors are my favorite "classic" rock band by far.

Love Me Two Times
When The Musics Over
The End
Unknown Soldier
Break On Through
Riders On The Storm
The End

Those dudes churned out great songs

Robbie Krieger is one of the most underrated songwriters of all time.

I am in the midst of watching a documentary right now called When You're Strange which is the story of The Doors. It has definitely increased my respect for them and that has a lot to do with the songwriting, although my impression at this early point was that Jim Morrison was the person I was respecting there. I know Robbie Krieger wrote Light My Fire which was their first number 1, but other than that I thought Morrison was the main writing force. Lyrics anyway. No?

Gentle Giant. Anyone familiar with Gentle Giant? That was a band that was popular in my circle of friends that I didn't like.

People really liked them. People had strong feelings about the virtues of Gentle Giant.

I remember people getting mad at me for not liking them and bringing forward theories about how I actually liked them but was just being contrary. I had to like them. They were original and creative - not cliche at all (which I agree), they had very talented musicians (which I agree). Why was I being a dick and saying I didn't like them when I obviously had to?

But no, I really didn't like them. Just didn't like the style and sound.

I haven't heard Gentle Giant in decades. I still have a general memory of them though and I'm pretty sure if I heard them now, I still wouldn't like them.
