Wasn't doing it for pity or sympathy, but thanks. My point was that the whole "Don't drink because it's bad for your health" is bullshit. You can get the same afflictions from living a clean life.

I actually just Googled it because until you posted I'd always thought it was caused solely by too much booze or hepatitis.

The human body is a travesty.

Yeah you can get it without drinking, just like you can get lung cancer without smoking. There are things that increase/decrease your chances but sometimes life just gives you the finger. Life is a big lottery and it works both ways. Some people get all the breaks and some people get the shaft and there is no fairness to it.

My girlfriend (ex-girlfriend?) has some cirrhosis. Hers is directly linked to drinking alcoholically. It doesn't actually have much of an effect on anything. She doesn't need to do much about it and is able to go on living her life barely even thinking about it. The one thing it does affect for her is pain medication. She has some pain from other causes and there are several analgesics that would be very helpful, but they keep them away from her because they have a strong action on the liver.

I guess like anything there are different degrees of cirrhosis. Unfortunately, as I understand it, it is irreversible and all you can do is try to prevent progression (other of course than the advanced cases where a liver transplant can be an option).

How do you prevent progression of it?

He's 64 and we're hoping that it's early enough that he doesn't have to do too much other than just alter his lifestyle (ie - lose weight and change medications).

My whole point in posting this wasn't for sympathy or attention. It was more of a "Who's drinking because I know I will be???"

I'm not the greatest person to be answering that. I mean obviously there are substances to stay away from as much as possible (alcohol, acetominphen, ibuprofen, Celebrex.) I'm sure there are dietary considerations. She is supposed go very light on the salt and limit her water consumption; I believe that's because of the cirrhosis. She takes an antibiotic once a week which I think is because of the cirrhosis.

Other than that though, I'm not sure. She really doesn't do anything.
