yes, this is something I noticed right away.
Keep in mind what I see from Canadian attitudes is considerably different from American media. Also I'm talking about Soviet times in particular which was, I'm guessing, a little before your time The Russia hate had not been fully turned on until Putin started pissing in their soup.

My right pointer finger has a split in it. Kinda where the edge of the fingernail is - the skin there is split up towards the fingertip.

It hurts.

I guess it is a result of the extreme cold and dry we have been having lately - combined with the repeated wear and tear of hard work. It just split. The thumb and middle fingers have little splits but not as bad. I had to put a bandaid on the pointer fingertip overnight because the skin around the split is kind of ragged and it would keep grabbing the blankets every time I moved and that yanked at the split and that hurt.

I'll live. I don't want to get overly dramatic about it.

But then I took the bandaid off for the day because it effects my mousing dexterity for the facebook game I like to play. But I am continually reminded of the split.
