How bout this Chris Borland guy, retiring in good health after 1 year in the NFL with still 3 years/2 million bucks on his rookie contract?

SAN FRANCISCO, March 17 (UPI) -- A promising linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, who recorded more than 100 tackles and intercepted two passes during his rookie campaign last season, will not dazzle fans with a followup.

Chris Borland announced Monday that he has decided to retire from professional football out of concern for his long-term health, specifically the potential for head trauma. The 24-year-old defensive standout was drafted in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft and signed last May.

In an interview with ESPN, Borland surprised millions of football fans by announcing his retirement from the game.

"I just honestly want to do what's best for my health," Borland told Outside the Lines. "From what I've researched and what I've experienced, I don't think it's worth the risk.

"I'm concerned that if you wait until you have symptoms, it's too late... There are a lot of unknowns. I can't claim that [anything] will happen. I just want to live a long, healthy life. And I don't want to have any neurological diseases or die younger than I would otherwise."

I'm inclined to give him all kinds of credit for intelligence and big-picture thinking but I just have this niggling feeling there is a little detail being left out.

But maybe not.

If he finished his contract he could be pretty much set for life financially. It is questionable if he is now. He earned about a million bucks last year - less taxes and agents fees and whatever - also, there is a chance SF could try to reclaim as much as half a mil of his signing bonus.

I mean, I'd be thrilled to have his bank account - but he has work ahead. But the guy got his degree. He has a vision for a professional future. Seems to have confidence.

Everything taken at face value ---> wise.

Very weird position the 49ers are in. Absolutely every right to go after a percentage of his signing bonus - almost a no-brainer if you just take a broad look at it - but the prevailing wind says they won't go there.

It's like to go there would be saying people who don't want head injuries must be punished. Some kind of collective guilty conscience at play. Or maybe it's just avoidance of the inevitable hysteria of the simpletons.

I guess I don't care about the NCAA tournament at all.

I had my TV on in the background while preparing dinner - which I often do. I often put it on a sports channel where I will get Pardon the Interruption or curling or baseball or various things on the weekend depending on the time of year..

Just something to idly have in the background.

Today I found games from the tournament. Just put the TV on mute.

I'm happy for people who are happy. People are different.

Turns out that for me, it is more desirable to have nothing than the tournament.

My friend the 49ers fan is getting enjoyment from the slow, lukewarm reaction to Michael Crabtree as a free agent.

Seems like no one is feeling much urgency to sign a bigmouth, me-first, shruggable-numbers wide receiver.

I tried it on for size: Michael Crabtree to my Bills. We got Sammy Watkins and Percy Harvin and a running based attack anyway. Short passing to McCoy.

Insurance is fine if the price is right but there are already questions about Harvins personality. Hmm.

Tell you what, Ill give him a one-year deal at a non-guaranteed $400,000.

Best I can do.
