Who knew that Bread was one of the best pitchers of all time? :dunno:

why couldn't they make a triple a roster?

there are entirely too many kids groomed to make it in sports these days... pitchers are so much better, throw it harder and the speed of the game would leave the vast majority of yesteryear players way behind

sandy was awesome for the 60s and maybe a few more decades... threw hard and had a snapping curve... today, 12yr olds are throwing 1ft. breaking balls and pro batters can connect with most everything thrown at them...

its just my opinion that there would be very very few players from 50yrs ago that could compete today... sandy could, but wouldnt sniff the era # from back then

sure, I remember reading Yogi Berra's biography. He made it sound like making the big leagues wasn't that big a deal. His brothers were all pretty good at playing too and if his father would have allowed it they all would've played big league ball. :dunno:
It wasn't such big business as every little thing has to be now. I like that.

Nonetheless, there is no point in comparing old time players to today's. If you want to compare them you have to look at how dominating they were against their peers.

If players are to be judged that way - which I believe they should - Babe Ruth is the greatest player of all time.

There was a year Babe Ruth won the home run race with 58 and the second place guy was 18 or some damn thing. There was a year where Babe Ruth had more home runs than the next 4 teams in the American League combined or some damn thing.

Fucker had some good pitching numbers too.

Babe Ruth ----> good at baseball.

And of course, by that type of measure, Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all time by a long shot.

I heard someone on the radio say that the Commonwealth Games - which are currently taking place - are a "B" event - and the Pan Am Games - which Toronto is hosting next year - is an "F" event.

That doesn't sound right to me. In terms of the countries eligible to participate, I would think they would be comparable - with the PanAm games actually being a bit better. Although it should be pointed out: I don't pay attention to either event so I have no idea if the eligible countries actually send their best athletes. Maybe the Commonwealth Games are better for that.

Or maybe the commentator was just trying to be fashionably critical of the upcoming PanAm Games. Rightly so. They do seem to be quite a boondoggle, if not indeed a clusterfuck.

I think it was every bit the business back then. The players had no power though. The media coverage was much different also, totally paining a rosy picture on everything.

Agreed

You rate players vs how the compared in their era

And most people and sports leagues agree

Otherwise guys like Sammy Baugh and jack lambert wouldn't make nfl greatest 50 all time lists

Ruth and koufax wouldn't make mlb top 100 lists

Bob Cousey and George Mikan wouldn't be on NBA lists

Howe and Orr wouldn't be remembered as all time greats in hockey

Nicklaus name would mean nothing because he wouldn't be able to keep up with the golf guys of recent years

Don't get me started on ice curling

I mean more from the point that a kid could be talented and have a chance to make it. Now it seems you have to work at it 24/7, take enhancers, torture your parents etc.. just to have a slight chance of making it.

You can't go down that road in this discussion, Ray.

Because then you'll have people 70 years from now saying Mike Trout wasn't good enough to make a current MLB roster.

i only ask, because i think another way out of shape, fat fucking slob, was probably the best hitter in baseball ( t.gwynn).. so i wont rule out that ruth could hit some high 80s/low90s balls these days.. then again, everyone in pro ball can... just curious
