How about a live-in nurse? Like a live-in maid but only for nurse related stuff. Get one of those working for $10, up their pay, and hire them personally or through an llc if necessary. I don't know if such setup is done here but in other countries is not uncommon. As an employer you control everything, you just got to be fair in terms of hours, what responsibilities, times, days off etc.

Nurse end up earning way more and you might even spend less than in a home by cutting out the middleman if you structure it right. If you do end up paying more it might be worth it to create a much better environment. I'm not a fan of old people home in general.

IAG
The whole end of life set up in the U.S. is horrible.

No disrespect but maybe this guy had it right?

:dunno:

I was just thinking about you and your situation and wondering how it was going. Alzheimer's and nursing homes are both really glum topics which people never seem to think will be part of their lives. After watching my mother take care of my grandmother (which was actually her foster mother) and finally decide to put her in a skilled nursing facility, I really have a lot of respect for those in the caregiving role. I really hope that you and your family are able to find the best situation for all of you (although none of them are ideal).
Yeah. The topic is really glum for those of us who have no kids to advocate for us. Be glad you have Ella! Thanks for your words girl.

Yeah. We have thought of that. The problem is that that is essentially my employment. I would have to take a serious cut to add in an additional full time person and still make it comparable to a nursing home...even now the numbers are close once you figure in my income, house expenses, cleaning gal and now the 2 hours of home health. Money is not the ultimate consideration of course as staying at home can be invaluable, but it's hard to justify paying me full time and then bringing in such expensive additional care.

No one is willing to work such a shit job for so little.
You would be surprised. The CNAs here I think make $10 an hour. I have already been approached by some wanting to be our home health person. Hell I could get 6 hours of their help and pay less than we are paying the agency people for 2 hours and still have them make more than they are with far less work. I just don't want to engage anyone and have them quit their job and then find that we need to go the nursing home route in a week or month. Sometimes too, having people around is more work than not.

They already do it for $10.
Yeah. If I was going to work for $10/hour, I think I would do almost anything including fast food before doing that work. They are ridiculously underpaid for what is expected of them.

IAG, I have learned that with the majority of Alzheimer patients, one of the last things that they seem to remember and respond to is music. Does your mom have some favorite music she enjoyed in the past?
Yes Nina! You are right on point. I have a lot of eldercare cds with old songs on them. Mom may not always remember her kid's names, but I'll be damned if she can't sing each and every one of those lyrics along with the music...lots of patriotic songs and hymns. I also have a bunch of Lawrence Welk shows recorded that I put on every night when she goes to bed.
I've seen some videos about people not talking for weeks/months and someone putting on a familiar piece of music and it brings them to life. I think about that when an old song comes on the radio that I haven't heard in 20 years, and the lyrics still come to me.

No Bacon..not with Jesse! I could only make it to the 1:30 mark. How do you find those things? lol

Their mothers must be so proud.

Would be kind of funny for you to do some kind of video with him though. I bet Matty could do a good one..whenever he gets his.

IAG, I'm sorry and shouldn't make light of your situation but the US gov is getting to the point of only the strong shall survive. If any procedure costs too much, they ain't paying for it! Probably only get worse for us when we get older unless your financially well off!

My friend is a music therapist and she worked with hospice patients, mostly Alzheimer's and dementia patients prior to opening her own clinic. She did a lot of research on response to music in Alzheimer's, including later stages. It's really amazing what the brain responds to when it becomes so tangled.

You are not making light and luckily I am not in a situation...my folks were savers and smart with money..unlike me....but it makes me mad when I see how ass backwards so much of eldercare is.

Note to self....check out long term care policies this week.

It really is. We have a cd of my dad singing some old songs he used to sing around the house. We play it for mom and she responds to the songs...not so much that it's my dad singing...but she remembers the songs...crazy stuff.
