I'm surprised more players aren't suspended. What's the reason they allow guys to fight for a few minutes before they toss them?

Stupidity? Hypocrisy?

The powers that be make speeches about needing to cut down on hits to the head for the health of their workforce and the good of the game. They cite data that shows the danger of brain injury. So they change the rules and raise awareness and hand out suspensions for an elbow or a shoulder that may or may not have been partially accidental.

But if a guy throws fists at someone's head in a way that is clearly intentional, that's okay. :dunno:

What I hear is they think the fighting appeals to American viewers they are trying to attract so that's why they let it go. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me but I have heard it enough times that I have to think it may be true. :dunno:

Not that anyone thinks what Cooke does may be accidental. He is the poster boy for repeat offenders.

Here's what I don't understand. Everyone says if the league had gone for a harsher penalty, the players association would have been up in arms. I'm sure that's true. My question is: why would the players association defend the one idiot member instead of the series of members past and future whose careers he jeopardizes?

So if you slam your stick on someone's head while he wears a protective helmet it's not allowed and you will get suspended but if you would like to fight him with bare firsts without wearing a protective helmet they give you a couple minutes to do the job.

pittsburgh is pretty good, and there are like 20 players on a team correct?

and he's not even a first string guy...............i think they can get through the first round without him - correct?

what's the most important line the guy plays on? 3rd line? penalty kill?

Correct. It is okay to attempt to injure your opponent's brain as long as it is done in a way that is entertaining to people who breathe through their mouths :greencheck:

yeah, they say fighting is an integral part of hockey. bla bla bla. I don't think it should be allowed.
However, to be fair, I don't believe there are many serious head injuries as a result of fighting.
I kind of feel bad for those role players. They constantly have to look for trouble, suffer through broken noses, black eyes etc... just to keep their job.

I'd bet now on Pitt losing in the first round if I could. They're missing players due to injury anyway (aside from Crosby and Malkin) and their lines are severely depleted

losing Cooke as well is another blow to a team that can't afford one, tonight's win against an injury-ravaged wings team notwithstanding

you could've made a few good lines out of the forwards missing from tonight's game
