Entered a $5 winner-takes-all pool at work and I made a $5 side bet with a coworker who thinks she's the ultimate movie buff. I basically picked all favorites - as per Pinny - except for best costume (Alice in Wonderland instead of King's Speech.)

Anyone betting this semi-seriously? What could be a big upset?

I have bet it quite seriously in the past but this year I am just not up to speed. As a rule, taking the favorites is a very good policy.

Ideally, for regular betting as opposed to pools, you want to jump on certain lines right when they are released because there has been some incredible line movement and it is pretty predictable.

But as I say, I am tragically out of the loop about what's happening this year.

Strange face on that gal. She can look hot on pictures but then she starts talking and it rearranges her oversized facial features in a number of improbable ways.

And yeah, this isn't the most promising hosting duo ever. I have very low expectations.

I'm fine with Inception winning the geeky categories. If they win anything of substance like cinematography or, God forbid, Best Picture, watch out. :robynballs:

BTW I started watching The King's Speech and I have no idea how it cannot be in the lead for best cinematography (True Grit is.) Every shot is a marvel of composition and the movie uses a clever mix of ultra-wide-angle and standard lenses. It's absolutely stunning.

I downloaded an illegal copy of True Grit but the quality is shite.

Muddy or Matty, could either of you give a rating of the best movie candidates? I mean this is what they have to choose from? I guess to each his own! Old man opinion again!
:mudcat:

Most years I would be a good person to discuss this but not this year. I have not seen The King's Speech. I actually have the Social Network sitting on my coffee table right now but I haven't seen it yet.

The only ones I have seen are The Kids Are Alright, Toy Story 3 and Inception. They all have some virtues but I sure don't see any of them as Best Picture material.

Having said all that, I am getting a distinct feeling from the buzz that The Kings Speech is it. And generally effective Oscar betting is more about interpreting buzz than personal judgment. So that's my call: The Kings Speech.
