Sideways (2004) - Former Best Picture nominee and winner of best Adapted Screenplay, I finally got around to seeing this for a second time.

It has a fundamental problem for me which is I don't really like to watch annoying people and uncomfortable situations. I know that stuff is all the rage for a lot of people but if there is someone I wouldn't want to spend 5 minutes with in real life, I probably don't want to see a 2 hour movie about them, even if it is very well put together.

That was my initial impression of the Paul Giamatti character as, no doubt, it is supposed to be. He is an obnoxious, alcoholic, self-pitying cliche of a manchild who steals cash from his mother. What a shithead. And the other guy is pretty much a cliche shithead too - of a different kind - although a more palatable one.

BUT this movie really is very well put together. I enjoyed it more and more as it went along. There is some good stuff in there. It is a bit hard to accept that the lovely Virginia Madsen character would be interested in Paul Giamatti, but sometimes you just gotta go with it.

There is some greatness in this film. It is tempered for me by some matters of personal taste but I ended up being very satisfied.

THE WATCH

with Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn

did this movie almost come out right before the whole trevyon martin deal and get pushed back?

just watched it on redbox

.5 out of 10 stars

The wife of Ben Stiller's Character's wife, with a hook nose is kinda hot, but not as hot as the tall blackish British Jemaine Clement guy!!!

I just got the Blu-Ray of this as a gift from the brother-in-common-law.

BICL - Have you already watched it?
Me - I have not! :wah: Thanks!

Sideways, yes I enjoyed that movie. I would call that the last good movie I saw in a theater.

A Serious Man. That was good, it helps if you're Jewish.

When I first heard you mention it I thought you were talking about The Man Who Wasn't There. That one sucked, especially after they killed off the Jon Polito character

I was noticing last night how much former Quentin Tarantino favorite Tim Roth resembles current Tarantino favorite Christoph Walz.

Based on your review I do not understand 6.9 out of 10. I do get what you are talking about, however, I ultimately do not feel the same, at all. In fact, I probably feel the opposite. For instance, I do not think I would want to hang out in the passenger seat during any of the following movies: Godfather, Goodfellas, or Casino. I like when I don't even remotely like the main character (if they were a real person) especially if I find their "troubles" to be somewhat engaging. A good example of this is the main character in Memento. In fact, all the characters in that movie are horrible people taking advantage of someone with anterograde amnesia who cannot make new memories. But probably one of my top movies of 2000.

Things that turn me off about movies would be:

#1 So much computer generation that it looks like it was made on a 19 year-old's laptop. A good example of this is comparing Terminator 2 with Terminator: Rise of the Machines. Terminator 2's graphic effects still look good to this day, and Rise of the Machines, although not on the same level for a number of reasons really lost me with the amount of CGI it used.

#2 Making the same movie over and over (this came to a head with the "disaster movies" of the 90's and early 2000's). Okay, how many times can I watch New York City destroyed?

#3 Re-making movies that don't need to be remade, or unnecessary sequels. Did Total Recall really need to be remade? And how many American Pie movies did we really need? 1 or 2 max. Oh throw in the making movies out of old TV shows. Dukes of Hazard? Come on, that was completely out of line. Whoever ponied up the money to make that one should just walk out into traffic.

finally watched Flight from start to finish last night... Denzel with another great perfomance, maybe award worthy... a very functional alcoholic divorced pilot who stayed up fucking on coke and booze the night before he performs a miraculous crash landing after the plane starts to malfunction and fall apart ... it doesnt do much to want to make you go get on a plane, thats for sure, but ill go out on a limb and say its the best movie i saw all year...much better than the over pumped Argo... i dont think its a "man on fire" type of performance, but its pretty damn good...

8 matty rains :rideem:

Oh yeah just thought of a much better film as an example. Clockwork Orange. Pretty sure I wouldn't want to hang around the droogs for too long. Although, I must admit, having a few brews at a pub, then walking around all hammered-like smashing in gullivers until they resemble eggie weggs with a bike chain does look good on film. :cop:

Those examples are only remotely comparable from my perspective. While there may be characters who could loosely be said to have a self-pitying manchild nature - I find those movies to have a much wider focus. I wasn't talking about discomfort to mean danger. All movies have conflict and therefore discomfort. I was being fairly specific.

However it is not surprising to me that you enjoy manchild cliches and hissyfits etc. based on your longterm interest in SBR forum. Personally I would have to be paid by the minute to look at that forum but lots of people do like that stuff. Different tastes.
