And the teeth in Moonlight - at times too perfect. I wonder if I am more aware of the effect with black people - due to the contrast. Like super whitened teeth really stand out and there are times and situations where they would not be happening. But there they are.

Truth to that, I imagine. That applies more to Fences than Moonlight. A 50's garbageman with perfectly straight whitened teeth is probably more nonsensical than a 1990's drug addicted mom.

And then there's this:

Call me racist, but I seriously doubt this was a typical smile of a 65-ish black dude roundabout the Civil War.

So Fences was unremarkable imo. I love the jive talking and all, but it's kind of like going to the track without the races.
Nothing really happens. 2.5 hours of basically the same scene. Just when things looked to be getting interesting they came out with that farcical pregnancy concept. ...At least there wasn't any senseless noises or violence. A couple mildly thought provoking philosophical angles. ...and the teeth didn't bother me.

So yeah, La La Land (2016) - well it had a strong open and finish. Somewhat floundery middle, at least from the point of view of being a musical. I'd kinda like to see what the creative guy behind it, Damian Chazelle, could come up with if he decided to do what he did at the start and end for a whole movie.

The leads, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are charming and likable. It's not an operatic style of music where going for star power over vocal chops really costs you. It's poppie. Emma Stone plus auto-tune is good enough. Likewise their dancing is not top professional level but it is not a big issue.

There is a serious theme - that of chasing your dreams versus compromising. That's always an iffy thing to get into for me. I don't love where we ended up with that but I guess that is a matter of personal interpretation.

Best Picture? I think it is the favorite right now (??) Doubtful it would have my vote but then that is true of most movies. But it's pretty good.

The Emma Stone mystery continues for me. How can she be so pleasant and likable - and look so good in her clothes - but have no sex appeal whatsoever? I know MrX does not agree but I also know I am far from the only one who does

She's talented too. This will probably be an Oscar for her and not undeserving IMO. I have no problem rooting for her.

But something doesn't add up.

Elizabeth Perkins. It's Elizabeth Perkins for a new generation. Fun. Pretty. Appealing.

But no boner.

Silence (2016

So I really wanted to be blown away by this film. The previews had me all pumped up, too. I wanted Silence to take me to a place that no film had before.

Sadly, this was not the case. Andrew Garfield -and Adam Driver - give admirable performances and I would not pin my disappointment on them but there is an awkwardness to the dialogue in this film. And there is something missing in Silence. Maybe I just needed to see people doing something else for a moment that wasn't ridding Japan of Christians.

And unlike The Revenant, you don't get lost (in a good way) by how Silence looks.

6.25 Trons

She's perfectly charming. I could see having her as a buddy and gabbing with her about what babes I would like to get with and yukking it up.

Returning to a previous tangent: did y'all know that Elizabeth Perkins actually did nudity later in her career? Brace yourself.

Season 1 of The Young Pope was okay. I don't have an unconditional love for it, but it has some very interesting elements.

It kind of seemed like it might be all over and done at the end of the 10th episode, but I see a 2nd season is approved and in the works.

Amazingly little use made of Diane Keaton.

Anyway I guess it actually premiers in North America, well lemme see . . . tomorrow.
