Ain't no 1950's dentistry up there nohow.

It's a fact of the modern period piece movie. Teeth are usually too good for the time.

Not sure I'm complaining. I remember the mini-series John Adams, they made an effort to recreate what teeth of the time would realistically be like. It was pretty distractingly gross in its own right.

Might be better to just let actors keep their non-gross teeth and just watch in denial.

No but seriously man, checked out Hell or High Water (2016) which is nominated for Best Drama at the Golden Globes tonight and also Jeff Bridges for best Supporting.

Very good movie. Subtle and low-key and patient. Nothing splashy about it. Doesn't strike me as something that jumps out and wins stuff, but just a well conceived and executed story of crime and family and America.

It's Golden Globes time already. Tomorrow to be exact. I don't watch them but they are a good heads-up for me as far as stuff to see.

I immediately see some nominations I disagree with - but that is par for the course.

I already have most of the movies on my to-see list but one thing I am reminded to check out is The People v. O.J. Simpson. That got a lot of positive buzz from people I trust. I am actually the rare bird who paid almost no attention to the O.J. trial when it was happening - so it will not be a review for me. It will be some new material.

The People vs. OJ Simpson just won the Golden Globe over The Night Of, among others. Well shit.

Swiss Army Man (2016) - Hey listen, I am as open to an avant-garde, experimental dark comedy with surrealist overtones about a guy on a deserted island who befriends a dead body as anybody, but this just did not work for me.

Gags didn't make me laugh, thoughtful lessons-in-life were a yawn.

Points for trying I guess.

Elle (2016) - Ever wonder what Paul Verhoeven has been up to since Showgirls? The answer is not a ton. A movie every 4 or 5 years. And now Elle.

It got my attention because Isabelle Huppert - who is a definite candidate for hottest 60-something out there - won the Golden Globe for it. Best Actress in a drama.

Elle is ridiculous but not as ridiculous as Showgirls. Isabelle Huppert is indeed very good. I'm not sure how much I would have noticed if not for the GG but that happened so here we are.

It's actually got decent ratings at imdb and RT so I guess the world did not find it so ridiculous. :dunno: Whateva, FYI, it's in French.

They are shooting a movie in my hood. Molly's Game. Some A-list shit with Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba.

They were over in the parking lot where my dentist is - and Jenny's gym - yesterday.

Molly Bloom, a young skier and former Olympic hopeful becomes a successful entrepreneur (and a target of an FBI investigation) when she establishes a high-stakes, international poker game.

So I guess I'll be scoping that out, looking for familiar sights, in 2017.

Moonlight (2016) - This won the Best Picture (Drama) at the GG's and seems sure to be nominated for the Oscar.

It's a very deliberate thing, this Moonlight - had me wondering a few times, 'are we going somewhere with this?' - but then it gives a wallop to the jaw.

It's not a movie - it's cinema.

It's good. The overall effect is powerful and positive. But I found the actual watching of it a bit too, shall we say, unthrilling, to get carried away with a super high rating.
