Larry Crowne (2011) - My amount of saved movies was getting low and I saw this in the listings and went for it. I couldn't remember what was said about it when it was released. I knew it wasn't a smash but, hell, it's got Tom Hanks who has a pretty high batting average for me - maybe it's not an all-timer but it shouldn't be TOO bad, I sez.

Yes it has Julia Roberts who has a much lower batting average but she was tolerable with Tom Hanks in Charlie Wilson's War so maybe this will be alright, I sez.

Then the opening titles are going and suddenly - major alarm - there is a co-writing credit for Nia Vardalos (who wrote My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a candidate for worst movie of all time IMO). But Hanks is the other co-writer so I stick with it. Maybe he overpowers her.

I'm not going to draw this out any more. This is not a good movie. Every "joke" is forced. Every character is a cliche. Julia Roberts acting is strikingly bad. Nothing is believable. There is only the most muddled point to it. It is a Nia Vardalos movie.

Only saving grace: George Takei. Yes Mr. Sulu has a supporting role. He is worth seeing. And Tom Hanks is fine.

3.9 out of 10.

PS - Bryan Cranston is in this. He is doing comedy and he is terrible. The guy can't do comedy. He is wonderful as Walter White in the drama Breaking Bad. But his whole career was built on comedy and he has never been any good at it and he still isn't.

Weird.

If I started listing all the successful TV shows I haven't seen an episode of, well, that would be one dreary post.

I was asked this week if I have ever seen the Big Bang Theory. I had to say no. The person I was speaking to was surprised and said they thought it would be right up my alley since it is an above average in intelligence comedy (given I am a snooty intellectual - with a sense of humor).

But no. I used to get the same basic comment about the show Frasier when it was running.

I have seen 15 seconds of Big Bang Theory probably 50 times. I guess it's on right before something I watch? Daily Show? Not even sure why I have seen so many snippets but there have been a lot - but it has not coaxed me into more than that yet.

On The Road is a fantastic 2-hour trailer for the book of the same name.

As a standalone movie though, I'm afraid that it won't have much of an audience. You need to have read the book, or read about the book, to appreciate this. And you need to care about the beatnik/bop cultural phenomena to enjoy this otherwise fine piece of film.

Love the fact that they bothered to have the actors use a near-authentic hick Quebec French when talking to Sal's Mom.

7 Matty Rains as a standalone movie

9 Matty Rains when taking into account the limitations of the 2-hour Hollywood movie format.

Great job, Mr. Salles. It's a shame that your film is unlikely to gain much fame.

Watching now. Kristen Stewart looks good!
