I have a feeling this guy is going to be a major force in the world of acting. I don't know why exactly. I have only seen him 1 thing - it was a TV show - In Treatment - maybe 8 episodes?? - he was very good no doubt but it was awhile ago and not that much to go on. Just saw a review for his new movie which got panned.

Don't care though. I'm calling it now. Going to be a big thing.

Enjoying Downton Abbey quite a bit, although I could do without the cheesy sitcom-like story development. (Stuff like the flower show and the Turk guy, all being introduced and resolved within the same episode.)

It's basically a soap opera for intellectuals.

I guess you can say the same thing about Mad Men.

The Flower Show thing was actually ripped off directly and unashamedly from the movie Mrs. Miniver. I found that a bit puzzling as I watched it.

Are they really doing this?

But they made so little effort to change anything that I guess it was more of a tribute than a pilfering.

My problem is - well, one of my problems is - I am too aware of impending death.

I am watching Boardwalk Empire with too much consciousness that it is the last season. Part of me is enjoying the moment but part of me is experiencing a process of life slipping away.

I hope the key creative people behind that are going to get something new of similar quality going right away.

I'll say this about The Knick: every time I think, okay, now they're going to venture into trying-too-hard territory, they don't.

It hasn't really done anything to make me have these fears/suspicions. I think it is more about other shows I have been watching in the last little while. Halt and Catch Fire, Masters of Sex, Ray Donovan. The writers always seem to want to call attention to themselves and do tricks.

But no, The Knick: good, smooth, balanced production. Plenty of subtlety and style. Intelligent. Very well done.

I mean obviously it's a TV show so everyone has more noteworthy stuff going on than you would expect from a random sample of people. But it's not over-the-top.

Also fascinating. In the same way that Mad Men occasionally veers from all the plots/characters and just takes a look at the state of advertising at that time, the Knick gives these detailed recollections of the state of medicine at the time. Educational - and makes you glad to be living in the present.

Good show.

I had to skip all the Boardwalk Empire talk since I recorded it. Will watch tonight. Been watching The Blacklist with James Spader (who looks very strange bald). So far I like it enough to keep watching. I guess at some point they are going to have to have some alternate endings because 5 episodes in they all end with Spader killing the dude he's looking for. I mean, they are pretty intense episodes, but they are gonna have to mix it up a bit. Also see some correlations (or some attempted correlations) between his character and the Hannibal Lecter character from Silence of the Lambs, at least I am perceiving them to be connections. Maybe it's just a bunch of coincidences.
