I have now seen all of the Oscar Best Picture winners. I completed my mission by finishing up The English Patient last night. I actually started watching it soon after it came out but decided, "Fuck it. This is putting my feet to sleep. I ain't watching this." And I packed it in after 40 minutes or whatever.

But I figured if I am going to watch all the Best Picture winners, I have to watch all the Best Picture winners. So I revisited The English Patient. It took a number of sittings to get through.

It was not actually THAT bad. My imdb rating from before was sitting at 1 - which is pretty standard for a movie not good enough to compel me to even watch to the end. However on review, I upped my rating to 3. Still a thumbs down but it is not completely without value.

But it would definitely enter my thoughts in a discussion of worst Best Pictures. It has good production values and all, but I would really need to be paid by the hour to ever watch it again.

I don't hear Titanic year being talked about as one of the all-time controversial. As with every other winner, there are people who gripe but there are many years where there is more unanimity in the condemnation.

These were the nominees for Best Picture that year:

Titanic
As Good as It Gets
The Full Monty
Good Will Hunting
L.A. Confidential

I prolly like all 4 also-rans better than Titanic but I can make a case against them all. Certainly none of them look like a Best Picture winner like Titanic does. Same can be said of The English Patient over Fargo. It has that Oscar look and vibe. TEP has the sweeping African landscapes where Fargo has that weird Asian guy.

L.A. Confidential probably my favorite of the nominees Titanic year.
