In the Grinch Grab gift exchange, I ended up with a little portable rechargable speaker. Not sure if/how I will integrate that into my life.

First I had a Starbucks gift card - but someone Grinch grabbed that on me - then I had a LCBO (liquor store) gift card (along with a little 2-shot bottle of Patron (?) tequila) - someone Grinch grabbed that ---> I ended up with that little speaker.

:dunno:

I was just talking this week about getting a smartphone to replace my current cellphone which is, for all intents and purposes, a clock. It was not just idle chatter. It makes all the sense in the world and I believe it will finally happen early in the new year.

The one guy at work is constantly checking his smartphone. He is the main guy I asked for advice about smartphones.

He is all about the smartphone. It's like his job is an inconvenience to his smartphone checking. I have known a lot of bosses who would have told him a long time ago, no, you cannot be doing that. No more smartphone on working time. You can do whatever you want during your many smoke breaks and of course lunch - and 1 or 2 quick checks during work would even be tolerable.

But you are ridiculous.

He is that guy.

I have to say I love my iphone. LOVE it. However, I have been debating chucking it because I have a computer, and an ipad, and I am only gone from the house 12-13 hours per week. I think I need to have a phone with me, in case of an emergency with mom. Really the only place I need it is at the gym for texting, music, surfing...(they don't have wifi there (wth?) so can't use ipad) But I can text on a regular cell phone right?

I guess the camera feature is nice. But is it worth $119? or whatever I pay per month? What does a bare bones cell phone cost per month..one that would at least have texting plan? I would also have to invest in an ipod I guess since I got rid of mine when I got the phone.

My mom still has two phones attached to the wall. Those come in handy in case of a power outage btw. Cordless phones are nice, and we have those also, but won't do you much good when the battery dies and no power.

From the recent discussions I had, you can get a smartphone for a helluva lot less than $120/month. I ain't paying that.

I got the impression I could get something for like 40 bucks? I guess phoning and texting charges would go on top of that but I do practically none of either.

That is the theoretical number I am working with ~40 bucks. I am paying like 30 now for my portable clock and I buy a stupid newspaper every workday which is about $22/month. I figger I won't need that if I have a smartphone.

(My current phone does have a camera. Couldn't really say if it is decent or not.)

So that is the sort of math I am dealing with here.

Non-smart phones can have decent cameras, and will almost always function as a music player, also. You don't really have to get an ipod.

How much does one of those non smart phones with decent cameras and music players cost per month? How bout initial investment? I already have the big investment in the device itself.
I would imagine with a contract I could get a cheap dumb phone free?

I'm probably all talk....I am not sure I could part with my iphone unless the savings are dramatic..and even then it will take quite an adjustment period.

I was paying closer to $140 a month I think and somehow got it reduced to $119. I don't know what all that gets me...unlimited talk/text which I really don't need. Come to think of it, I am not sure what I am paying for and I've had it for 2-3 years. Anyone else with an Iphone ---what is your monthly carrier charge? My service is thru Verizon. I don't know if Iphone is different than other smart phones in terms of monthly pricing...would be interested in other device prices as well, although if I were going to have a smart phone, I think I would keep my Iphone....so easy for technophobes like me. But then again for $80/month savings, I would be willing to consider a switch.

The whole thing probably wouldn't make sense unless you were going to sell your iPhone. The savings in switching to a non-smartphone plan depend on your provider. My complete guess would be no more than about 30% savings. If your get a new contract, a good dumbphone should be free. You could pick up a used one for next to nothing, if you don't get a new contract.
