How about Texan Republican legislator Joe Barton freaking apologizing to BP for the White House 'shaking them down' for a $20 billion 'slush fund'? I guess oil hasn't washed up onto the TX beaches yet. Oh yeah, he's also chairman of the House-Senate energy conference committee. No kickbacks here.

Has America gone that partisan that certain people must be on the opposite team no matter what the issue?

Yes. And just when you think it can't get worse, something like this comes along. The American political situation would be hilarious if they didn't have so many big dangerous weapons lying around. You never know what could happen down there for some stupid reason.

Sickening is a very good word for it.

Theres a lot of blame to go around.

BP deserves their share of it, but they aren't the only ones.

The lack of any action immediately after the spill, is what I find so bothersome.

Why should the government step up when they were told that a plan was in place and that BP was handling the situation? Sure that 'plan' was bullshit and the plan they had on paper for this kind of situation is the same one used by all the oil companies. Oh and their main contact for this situation has been dead for 5 years. BP has screwed this pooch since it's inception.

The Government shoud have step up so oil didn't reach US beaches. THe state of Lousiana had a plan, but the EPA wouldn't allow them to implement it untill environmnetal study was complete.

I am not saying BP does not deserve blame, they fucked up, but to just believe that they would fix it and all would be alright is idiotic. The government didn't take action until they knew oil would hit shore. And they only did that because of public outrage.

BP is definitely to blame here for a lot of what has gone on, but as stated earlier...there is blame for everyone. The government messed up, the EPA messed up and so on. BP is easy to blame and that makes life easy for the government. To force them to spend $20 billion dollars...I am sorry but that is so excessive it is insane.

Just for a point of reference. The oil spill in Kuwait in the early '90s was twice as bad as this one (albeit on purpose, but still twice as bad), wildlife and vegetation was completely restored in 3 years. Yes there are still some after effects but this is a lot of noise for nothing if you want my opinion.

Amby, there are quite a few people out of work as a result of this spill. The cost of it will certainly exceed $20 billion. I really don't think it's a bad idea to secure some of those funds and insure that the taxpayers aren't footing the bill once again.

how about we follow the rule of law instead of the president trying to use his influence to get government in as the middleman of the claim process. so now the so-called independent third party in the claims process will be Kenneth Feinberg aka Obama's Pay Czar. The same guy that has the power to set pay for executives at private firms, which is completely unconstitutional.

Would you rather pay for it?
