I am doing a budget

This is an interesting question. What happens when we die?

Sometimes people with a religion involving a super-deluxe afterlife will get caught up and impassioned on the subject. Like, "What do you mean you don't believe in heaven? You mean you think there's just nothing? That's so horrible it's impossible."

Without getting into the whole issue of how wishing really really hard that something was true, doesn't actually make it more likely - I ask the question, "Well okay, what do you think was going on before you were born? That's what happens after you die. Not horrible at all. Completely neutral."

But then some of them have elaborate reincarnation ideas. You can't win.

I know what you're thinking though: Muddy, now that you're getting a raise of who-knows-how-much-it-will-all-come-to? - 80%+ seems like a reasonable guess - okay, so what about the budget?

Well here's what I am thinking: basically keep to the same budget. Allow for a few more treats here and there. A few more ribs n' wings 'n maybe a really nice steak now and then. Maybe add $50/month to the grocery number and aim for under $350.

But everything else stays stingy and basically the same.

All extra income gets put the fuck away and saved in various forms and don't fucking touch it you fucking knob.

Is my thought on that.

If you're constantly blowing a budget increasing it shouldn't help. It's a pattern of overspending. Unless you were previously below the poverty line and failing to keep a budget was for necessities you do yourself a disservice by increasing your discretionary spend with pay increases.

The path to long term wealth (or a relatively comfortable retirement) is in NOT increasing your budget as your earning increases. Keep your budget the same, try to meet it regularly but reward yourself for the raise with a one time extra-budgetary splurge.

So I was at the grocery store needing hot dog bunz - and all they had were "Street Dog Buns." They are a pretty big bun covered with poppy seeds.

Far from feeling put out because they didn't have my usual bun, they looked good and I bought a bag with enthusiasm.

Okay they suck. What a ridiculous product.

The problem being: you get poppy seeds everywhere. I mean EVERYWHERE. It's completely ridiculous. I remember liking poppy seeds in my mom's beef stroganoff - but these are just a mess. I'm sure I will be finding poppy seeds around my kitchen for months. YOU will probably find some of my poppy seeds in your shoe just from reading this email.

Well fuck it - I threw out the bag. I ain't fucking around with that shit. I'm sorry about the starving kids in West Virginia but I chucked it.

That's how I roll.

Checking the budget after the first full month of getting paid for the new job.

~$500 more income than outgo for July. I can't believe it but it's right there in black and white. No mistake. That's not counting RRSP contributions of a couple hundred plus intentional overpayment of tax which will come back later.

That also doesn't count the 2 overtime Sundays I just worked. Those will be on my first pay in August.

Making more money ---> it's good.

Expenditures are definitely up though - and will remain up - if for no other reason ---> lunches.

Gone are the days when lunch might be a little thingy of raisins and a granola bar and maybe a couple plums. Lunch now has to be a sizeable submarine-style sammich - with some substantial meat and cheese on it - and probably some chips/cheesies on the side - and a tub of grapes and a large chocolate bar or cakey cake.

Or maybe half a pizza or a couple burgers or jumbo dogs.

I gotta eat like a sumbitch these days.

Groceries over $400 for September.

After working things out in my previous job situation and keeping things under - or at least right around - $300 for many months ----> this month over 4.

Here's what I am learning: when you eat more, you spend more on groceries.

I have returned to the tradition of picking up a Dairy Queen Blizzard as I head home for the weekend. I stopped that awhile back and switched to just keeping ice cream in the fridge - since I could get a tub with 3 servings for a bit less $$$ than 1 medium Blizzard - standard budgetary thinking - however I now have money in the bank and dammit, life is meant to be lived.

Meaning a Blizzard.
