Muddy,
You have me thinking now. Based on what you've mentioned about a player like Gartner, does Brett Hull belong in the HHOF? This was one of the laziest players of all time who had an incredible shot. Curious to hear your thoughts.

I would say yes to Brett Hull, definitely.

My thinking is that a HHOFer (or any HOFer in any sport) should be someone who was elite, someone who was one of the very top guys at something important for a long time - while also having a very good overall career.

Hull was a top scorer for a long time, right at the top of the list for a good stretch there. Scoring is important.

Hart Trophy and a couple of Cups.

Plus he did some historic shit. I think that counts. 50 goals in 50 games - twice. An 86 goal season. Those are rare accomplishments.

On top of that he had longevity - which counts. He is comfortably over a point-per-game for his career.

Gartner never did anything historic. He was never the top at anything. He didn't average a point-per-game.

I was basically playing devil's advocate when I made my case against Gartner. 700 goals - I can't begrudge. But I see Hull's career as being much more "Famous"

I was watching an interview with Doug Gilmour whilst eating dinner. The thing I found most interesting was not about Killer or any of today's inductees. They started talking about Wayne Gretzky whom Leafs fans will know was the author of one of the great disappointments in Gilmour's career when the Kings beat out the Leafs to make it to the Cup finals in 1993.

Anyway they got talking about Gretzky, and Gilmour was saying how, when they were teammates on the (bloody extraordinary) 1987 Canada Cup team and they would do skating drills, Gretzky was always the fastest skater. Like they would have races of various numbers of laps and it wasn't Paul Coffey or any of the other amazing all-stars on that team that would finish first - it was Wayne Gretzky.

I just found that so interesting. Gretzky was an odd looking skater no doubt, and analysts would actually talk about how skating was the weakness in his game - and I guess I had come to believe that somehow. But I guess it was all a load of bullshit.

I tell ya, I have a fascination with Wayne Gretzky. I am not a guy to make heroes out of athletes - but Wayne Gretzky is pretty close to it for me.
