Yes a win is a win, but i still wouldn't refer to him as a great coach. He's no Scotty Bowman, Punch Imlach, Pat Quinn etc. Not even close. His own players hated him because he was such a hard core commie who used threats and intimidation. That's not coaching.

Yeah, that horrible Soviet system. Thats why his teams were the best of the best, and after the collapse of the country Russian hockey has been shit. I'm sure the Russian people are very grateful for your freedom loving(?) high standards.

Why not ask those same players who "hated" him if they think he deserves awards or not?

I'm well aware that the elite players had a very difficult regiment. But many benefits to the way Soviets treated and developed and provided opportunities for young athletes over North America.

It is pretty impressive that the bias and hatred thats instilled in Americans is so strong against anything Soviet/Russian that it can't help but show its ugly face even in such a case. A case which really doesn't need to be politicized for one. And two, for someone who apparently appreciates great hockey :dunno:

What are the benefits?

I don't think there is any hatred in north america toward the Soviet style of hockey, its just a different style. All I've read in the last couple of days was respect to the coach and the dominance for that long a period.

Have you been reading Pucky's posts? You don't see that as an insult to the legacy of Soviet hockey. Anybody in a leadership position is demonized.

Primary benefits are that kids are encouraged to participate in sport and are not required to pay for everything themselves. Therefore, the state who spends a great amount of resources on ALL children, cannot hand over for nothing the few elites that people like Tikhonov develop through tireless work.

You may prefer Western system but the disrespect is simply classlessness or ignorance.

Don't get me wrong. I like russian players past and present with the exception of a couple. I think you know that. I just don't think Tikhonov was a great coach like scotty, pat, punch etc.

You know i liked the old tic tac toe style, but this wasn't something that Tikhonov developed.

This isn't a dig at all towards the Yanks, but Canadians know and would appreciate the old Soviet style hockey. The Summit Series was huge back in '72 as were ALL the Canada Cups. I remember watching the Soviet National team in 1987 live. Their warmup was amazing and their game they played blew me away. Shirt tic tac toe passes. It was incredible to watch.

Reno, i wasn't insulting the old Soviet style of hockey or its legacy. Not at all. I'm sorry you feel this way, my hockey comrade. Outside of Canadian players (we really are the best in the world), Russian hockey players are by far my favourite players. I know you know this.

thats what makes this so strange(?) interesting(?).
You feel that it's ok or even behooved :dunno: to point out some nonsensical propaganda, which apparently allows you despise an integral person in hockey development, so you can file him bellow some litany of hardly relevant Canadian coaches.

I mean it's possible he might have been a bit of a prick:clapper: But this idea he should have let his elite players fok off, or allow them to leave for the NHL is :bs: ..prob wasn't his decision anyway.
I'd guess many players, once they came to NA and had to put up with the coaches and rules here, couldn't wait to gtfo. No way most realized the kind of shit they have to deal with. But the Soviet program was gone by then. Lets leave all that to the people there. :pucky:

Basically the soviet system was ingrained into their hockey program - he probably was the perfect coach for that. That was the allure of the Summit Series, to see if one system was better than the other.

wow! legend :bowpanda:

I consider him one too!

There's been great American coaches too who were heavy handed disciplinarians!
