It's just hockey, so don't mistake this question for caring, but....

US beat Canada

I know that it's not the fault of the teams, but this is the most retarded setup ever to decide a Gold Medal winner.

But don't get me wrong. I'm actually glad that there won't be a third sudden death game. That would mean prolonging the Winter Olympics for one more day. No thanks. But it doesn't make the setup any less gay.

:hattip:

It's pool play Bread. Why does this have you so confounded? You split all the teams into a certain number of groups. You have all teams in each individual group play each other. The team with the best record in each group (or in this case top 2 teams based on record) after they have all played each other advances to the sudden death stage. It's a very common system in international competition. World Cup uses the same setup.

Well, it's been that system for decades. It's the same system in Olympic basketball. It's the same thing in practically ALL international competition.

I don't agree with your premise that this should be a "do or die" setup from game 1. I like the idea of games that matter more the further you get into the tournament. I like the idea of teams having time to work out a few kinks if needed. I like the idea of teams being allowed a mulligan early in the tournament if they have an uncharacteristically bad outing. I like pool play. I think it's a really good way to run large, stand-alone tournaments.

the system is lousy. The least they could have done is have the seedings matter for matchups in the quarter and semis. They only have time for 6 games and make 3 of them meaningless.
They should have round robin of 5 games, two teams with best record play for gold.

Only Richie can use that stupid hat tip.

Don't be a Richie.

I think I like the idea. You're right, the current system makes the 3-game round-robin almost completely pointless. You don't see the short track speed skaters run a bunch of races just for show (and the tiniest incident can end their Games, which seems quite unfair in comparison.)
