Bart Chilton, one of five commissioners at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, said he had asked staff to explore whether consumers needed more protection from any mishaps with Bitcoin, whose value collapsed last month.

"Here's what I know for sure: we could regulate it if we wanted. That is very clear," Chilton told Reuters in an interview on Monday.

Well yeah. Zero doubt about that. You can't completely sidestep society while using its infrastructure.

A regulated, universal e-currency would be cool. I think.

There'll probably be a fork at some point, a regulated/taxed Bitcoin and a renegade cryptocurrency.

His use of American spelling and the timing of his posts - rarely late at night on the East Coast - could suggest that Roberts is based in America. It's also unlikely that they're moving. "The Silk Road database is probably huge," Sandvik explained. "If he starts moving stuff, there will be a lot of red flags." As for whether they'll ever find him... "I imagine that maybe one day they'll pick up some guy for some other drug-related crime, search his house and just happen to stumble upon the server."
