matty mountain biking

😬

I did about 100 yards of that trail and noped around.

Stuck to the easiest trail - the one in the pic is the 2nd easiest, which is already way above my skillset.

I'm a dumb meathead roadie with zero bike handling skills.

Know your lane, boys and girl.

Don’t give up yet

Mountain biking, for me, is 30x more exciting, rewarding than road cycling.

Unfortunately for me a bad wreck 4 years ago still lingers to this day :(

But I’m REALLY close to buying another full suspension bike and getting back out into the woods.

Yeah, I did several laps of that one easy trail. The first lap sucked cause I was going too slow and my wheels kept getting kicked sideways by wet rocks and roots. I gradually became more confident and once I gained some speed, the bike started sort of floating over obstacles. It got fun. It's all about reading the terrain and picking a line. Completely different sport.

I love road riding though. Love the calming effect of just mindlessly racking up miles for hours on smooth surfaces. Scratches the same itch as long motorcycle trips for me.

Mongoose Fireball. Cheap dirt jumper with 26" wheels. Was given to me by my Chilean-Syrian buddy. Fine bike. Might try to convert it to tubeless tires and upgrade the brakes.

I’m gonna be the mountain bike snob and say a buncha stuff you probably already know but I want you to feel the joys of mountain biking so:

Those wheels are very small for mountain biking. 27.5 is fine and 29’s are ideal for going over big things

I’m worried that no rear suspension and garbage front suspension will keep you from having a pleasurable mountain biking experience and then you’ll give up on it.

And you’ll have to invest in SPD’s anyway after you chuck the pedals. Have you looked for used full suspensions in the $600-$800 range?
