I would say no doubt technology has given any next generation more a varied lifestyle to possibly take advantage of! More freedom also for this generation than the BabyBoomers but for some people more issues arise out of it!

My mom never worked but say roughly in 1975 about 20-30% of my friends had 2 parent working families! Of course we were probably below middle-class so extra income could have helped but I never felt like I missed out on stuff!

Just MO but seems like society as a whole is not as people friendly to each other as when I was a kid! Society seems more violent but with all media coverage out there maybe was violent too back then but just didn't hear bout it?

Financially, home purchase seems to be best comparison on what your dollar would get you and of course the biggest purchase(s) one would make in their lifetime! Thought housing was easier financially for BBoomers then the present gen but let's look at the numbers* .......

A 1946 born BB in 1971 paid 23,900 for a US median priced home and 2013 that amount would get you a 138,016 house!

A 1955 born BB in 1980 paid 72,400 for a US median price home and in 2013 that amount would get you 205,493 house!

A 1964 born BB in 1989 paid 113,000 for a US median priced home and 2013 that amount would get you a 213,130 house!

A median priced home in 2010** was 218,300!

By the above numbers early BBs got more for their "dollar" but by end of the born BB cycle it's nearly equal in dollar value to what a person born in 1988 would pay for a home in 2013!

*US Census site has been terminated but got these from site that got them from US Census site
** Only went up to 2010

I heard the word penis 3 times and the word masturbation on prime network tv in less than 12 hours. To make it worse, one of the "penis" mentions was by Barbara Walters. No one wants to hear that. Even I wasn't sitting in the same room as my "greatest generation" mother, I would have been disturbed by this.

Good call on the TV deal Matty. Not just cuz TV is trash these days, but for many reasons.

On a serious side note, do any librarys have card catalogs anymore? Does the dewy decimal system still exist? I haven't been to a library in a while. For those of you with kids, do they do research for school anymore? in books? Or does the internet eliminate the need for using research skills. I suppose I could google that question, but would rather not. In fact, I may go on a Google holiday soon. Or maybe that's just dumb.

Yeh. And for your $550k you get a shitty fixer-upper. That's what 3 of my coworkers paid recently, including my boss (single-income family of 3). He makes decent money but he is the very definition of house poor.

People think nothing of spending 50% of their net income on housing/mortgage here. In Montreal the norm is more like 25-33%.

Wow. That's nuts. Sounds like Hawaii. My buddy spent $550k for his home there...it's nice enough, it's just for that kind of money you could get a WHOLE lot more in most of the states. He sent me the picture and I guess I was expecting something more. Shdw if you're reading this, I love your house.

Is the income level much higher there also, or is it just insane property prices?

isnt that about what a house costs in most decent sized cities? an 800 square foot one bedroom condo here is about 400k. sure you can buy a house in a slum 150k, but to get something where you would actually want to live would be a lot more.

No. Not sure what you consider a decent size city, or what you consider a "slum, " but I think that is high. Where do you live Fu? Sorry...if I knew I forget. I would say $300,000 would get you an ok/nice place in most decent size US cites outside of NY/MA area or California. Not Necessarily your dream home, but certainly homes that by no means are considered "slums."

Aurora proper about 1/2 mile from the Denver city limit. It's the better part of Aurora (South) , but it's still Aurora. The only other thing I can compare is a sibling in Denver who paid 1.4m about 10 years ago, but it's a huge home in "historic" Denver near Cherry Creek and sounds like something comparable would cost at least 3m there.
