It sounds kinda like something but ultimately I disagree. Specifically, as a baby boomer, I don't feel that "my world" has been better than the next generation's.

I mean, I can certainly focus nostalgically on certain aspects of my time but overall, not a chance. The world has continued to get steadily better IMO.

So What's a Boomer, Anyhow?

Glad you asked. Stated very simply, the demographers, sociologists and the media define baby boomers as those born between (and including) 1946 and 1964. (There is no law or constitutional amendment so stating; and other boundaries have been suggested. But this is the time frame most commonly used.) In 2013, that would make us between 49 and 67 years old. There are about 75 million boomers in the U.S.; we currently represent about 29% of the U.S. population. (In Canada, we are sometimes known as "Boomies"; there are 6 million of us there

Interesting thread , but I agree with mudcat in alot of ways. San Francisco in 68 was probably pretty exciting but San Francisco in 2013 is incredibly creative and exciting, not to mention the bohemia and start up culture in New York, DC and tons of college towns and cities around the states. The 1960s had race riots and assassinations , the berlin crisis and the cold war/nuclear fears, a draft for a very unpopular war, massive penalties for something like possession of a joint. Alot of that 1960s culture came from alot of stress and anxiety. Bohemia has changed to the startup culture/programming/etc but there is still alot of great music and art out there, you just have to look a little harder for it. I actually like alot of my grandparents culture, the 1920's and start of the last century to the 1950's was an incredible time in American history , hopefully we dont go from the roaring 20s of the last century to the boring 20's of this century but I dont think living in "turbulent times " is all it made out to be.

The chinese have a phrase" may you live in interesting times". It is a very interesting time in science and engineering in America, but hopefully "exciting or interesting times" won't include world wars or something like the vietnam war and riots.

fewer social skills

yap - that's even true of my generation

Just decided that I was gonna get rid of the TV before the kid is born, for both our sake and the baby's. No iPad/iPhone/video games for Jean-Louis either, not before he's in school anyway.

Both the GF and I woulda benefited from an electronics-less early childhood.

Born in 1964, I guess I qualify. Growing up now seems much tougher now. I see far more kids growing up in single- parent homes. They are taking drugs (legal and illegal), and fewer social skills. This generation is fucked.

Agreed. I would give up the internet in a heartbeat if we could go back to a simpler time.even if I had to get my ass up and change the channel. Give me vinyl and the Brady Bunch. I guess the older I get, the more conservative I get, but life was better when America was simpler, more God fearing, and overall just kinder. Tv is trash these days and no one eats dinner as a family anymore. Just knd of sad to me.

 good job Matty

IAG, I agree with your definition. Maybe doesnt span 20 years but its more accurate in terms of after war babies, 60 teens, Woodstock, all that jazz. 60-75 would be our gen x I would say
