I've been saying it for a while that some day I want to buy a decent camera and learn how to use th thing. I am looking at this one -

I know fok all about cameras. Decent starter camera?

It would be for hockey, family shit, outdoor shit, fishermen in boats, old dilaptidated country farm houses/barns, wildlife etc. that sort of shit. I'd liek to keep it under $1K. I think they had the T3i on sale last year (just after xmas) for $599.

I would strongly recommend a package with the 18-200 lens. Otherwise get the T3i w/ the 18-55 and 55-250, but be prepared to swap lenses all the time.

I use the 28-200mm zoom on my full-frame D600 about 90% of the time. Only swap for taking portraits in low-light (50mm f/1.8) or super wide angle shots (20mm f/4).

Matty, mon ami, do you know photoshop or other photo editing software? I assume I should or would have to learn photoshop. I know fok all about photoshop, but always wanted to learn. Seems like it would be easy, but I would have to buy the software and books etc.

Yeah, I use Photoshop at work and at home all the time.

It's easy to get going and do simple photo manipulation stuff, but it is pro-level software. It's complex beyond your (or my) understanding.

by 18- 200, do you mean MM? This shit is confusing me already. The T3i comes with 18 - 55 mm built in? But you can add a lens that will give you from 55 - 250 MM?

What about the T4i. it comes with 18 - 55 MM as well , but you can add an additional 40 MM by adding the additional "smaller" lens?

If so, then I think I understand. The T3i looks like it would be heavy, bulky and a PITA, but I think it's more powerful.

No lens is "built-in". The camera body is sold to you with both a 18mm-55mm lens (which is good for landscape and portraits) and a 55mm-250mm (which is good for portraits and long-distance/hockey arena/wildlife shots)

The 18mm-200mm lens covers the whole range without needing you to swap between lenses.

OK I might have to pick up the software and a decent book to get me going. Any recommendations on books for a beginner like me?
