I'm not even sure I know what a hipster is anymore. But then again, maybe I never knew what a hipster ever was. There are the clear hipster douchebags who ride fixies and wax their moustaches but beyond that, it's a giant grey area.

I've been called a hipster because I have facial hair and wear plaid shirts. The facial hair can be explained away in a simple answer of "I've been told I look stupid without hair on my face." I need hair on my face. Too many people have told me I look silly without it.

As for plaid shirts, I've been wearing them ever since I was a kid. I grew up poor, my father was a garbage man and he used to buy me bags of clothes from Goodwill. In those bags would be plaid shirts, it's just something I've always worn. I'm as far away from a hipster as you can get. I watch horse racing and bad porn. I'm uneducated and stupid.

There are certain pockets in certain cities that hipster frequent. I know Casper is moving to the hipster capital of the west recently.

Matty, I'm leaning with Pucky on this one! Guy is way too clean looking regardless of the beard to be a hippie and too much tat action going on? Plus you really can't determine the hippie until you get close enough to them to get their scent! Just saying!

PS And the Kid Rock looking hat! Common!

Fiver I agree. And walking to the subway yesterday I was thinking if this thread. I was wearing plaid like I have for years, and I passed a clear hipster wearing a similar get up. I lamented the fact that to many I probably look similar to this guy, and that his class of people have essentially ruined plaid for me (if I was to let them).

Its a very fluid group of people and aside from the obvious standouts the best way to identify them is through self recognition and completely subjective weighing of all the evidence. Very similar to political affiliation in this regard. For example, I identify my self as a republican but other party members, democrats, scholars, friends and family might differ in what that means or even if its true.
 
Agree that it is a moving target, but as a general rule, hipsterism is calculated.

MrM modern-day hippies are no more or less likely to smoke pot than the average citizen.

Smoking pot is more socially acceptable than smoking cigarettes these days.
