majority of hipsters here are poor...work as waiters or in the restaurant biz somehow and live together...as in a lot of people crammed into shitty apts.

but the cost of normal everyday living is so much higher in new york, san fran, chitown...you have to make a little loot just to be off the street

Sort of. Here again, sincerity allows you to distinguish between the regular artsy fartsy type and the hipster. The normal human being is earnest while the hipster is smug.

When asked if he's a designer, the hipster will answer something like (verbatim from a conversation I had):

I have seen signs similar to this one. Haven't heard anything about it lately, but I know some were fighting the constitutionality of it.
