The way I read it is the guy who was yelling racial slurs shot but didn't kill the guy he was abusing. Then another patron chased him and shot him and an innocent person died in the crossfire. You incorrectly assume the event was going to escalate into random killings unless the patron with the gun chased and shot the original shooter.

I read the story multiple times...I'm not sure how you cam e to that conclusion.

If it was an accidental shooting it would not have been ruled a homicide

An autopsy Monday by forensic pathologist Dr. Gary Ross revealed Luzetsky, 39, died from multiple gunshot wounds. His death was ruled a homicide.

homicide/ˈhməˌsīd/
Noun:
The deliberate and unlawful killing of one person by another; murder.
The police department that deals with such crimes.
Synonyms:
murder - murderer - killer - assassination - assassin

IMO that article is unreadable. Shit is hard to make sense of.

Here's a better article,

Fleeing the barroom chaos on his way home, Scott Luzetsky walked into the enraged gunman's line of fire on East Main Street, suffering a fatal shot in the heart.

The rampage could have claimed more victims, the witness said, had it not been for the actions of another bar patron, Mark Ktytor of Plymouth, who returned fire at Allabaugh outside the bar, dropping him to the ground and ending the gun battle.

Here's a photo of the shooter by the way, I'm sure he would have stopped after the first shot

ITH. You have proved, to my satisfaction at least, that there are numerous cases of people defending themselves with guns in a manner most would approve of. It's hard to gauge how significant these incidents are numbers wise but looks to be considerable.

that's not to say that the legality of guns which leads to their greater number and availability is not responsible for more crime. :dunno:

Correlation does not imply causation. The great number of guns could be attributed to the fear of the violence surrounding gun owners. In addition, it could not possibly be absolute as Sweden has similar gun ownership rates as the United States and significantly lower gun violence rates.
