I'm not sure why my valuation is dependant on the relationship to the person for whom care is provided. And of course there are plenty of people who do not get paid to caretake for their parents. Do you think I don't get that? I don't know how they do it, and I feel bad for them, but I am not sure what they have to do with me.

Yes...it worked out well for both of us because you are right, I could not walk back into the private sector making what I was...I had been with that company 16 years.
The reality is however, that there had to be a value placed on my time because I am not independently wealthy, and need an income like anyone else to pay my bills. I don't think pointing out that 24/7/365 no vacation no insurance that 100k reduces to about minimum wage, should be considered "disheartening." I was saying that to counter the unspoken thoughts that that is a lot of money for the "job."
Also, into year 4, the delayed compensation portion of my comp. package is achieved, and would reduce my pay to about half of that which is probably more fitting in your eyes.
