Who is Shantystar and what's the big deal?

An artist cannot be taken out of the context in which he works.
If any dumb ass who showed up could instantly grasp the greatness of Shanty's work, then such work would become passe.
The detractors therefore can only add to Shanty's legend.

I think much like the character "Pally," there seems to be a fascination in this crowd for intelligent people who choose to express themselves like retards. I couldn't even hazard a guess as to why this is the case, but if you're going to post here, then you pretty much have to accept it.

RogueScholar I have never expressed myself as a retard on here. My posts have many levels. Which is why you see a lot of "confusion" about what I post, in the manner of "sometimes I hate him, sometimes I like what he posts". People's opinions of me reveal who they are, not who I am.

The one exception of course is when I post about games. Those posts have only one level of course, the handicapping level.

RogueScholar my other posts have many, many levels and meanings. Never assume that everything you perceive is all there is to be perceived.
 
I can play chess to a semi-decent standard. If I watch a game between two players who are a bit better than me, I can watch the game unfold and understand each players' strategy. If I am watching Kasparov play however, 90% of what happens is beyond my level of comprehension.

So it is with shantystar. It is best not to wonder why or what, just wonder at the supreme artistry of the man.

and yes, on a fundamental level, if you enjoy shantystar, that's great

If you don't, that's fine

On a basic level, shanty's work, like that of all artists, or rather should I say, all people who are awesome, exists merely to enhance the lives of those who would be enhanced by it

If you get nothing from him, thats fine

If you get nothing from him but want to know why others do, that is understandable, we will try to explain

But don't try to understand shanty by listening to the people who don't like him

See?!?!?! This is what I mean! You're obviously a bright guy, with a discerning intellect and the capacity to express it very well, but the majority of the time you post like a fifth-grader typing with his toes. If you can't take the time to express yourself in a manner which befits an educated man, don't presume that anybody's going to take the time to find deeper levels and meanings in your writing.

By stooping to your schtick, you alienate yourself from a vast audience of people hungry for a display of true insight and wisdom. It's obvious you possess such capacities, but simply can't be bothered to employ them most days. I wish I could sit idly by and laugh along with the rest of the Hooligans, but my experience of life has been that this planet serves as an open-air asylum for life-energies which can at best be described as fatally flawed. When I encounter someone who can add something meaningful to a day devoid of intrigue or esoteric thought, it is my greatest joy. Similarly, when I encounter someone who could share those things with others but chooses not to, it breaks my heart.

Next time you go for the cheap laugh or the 20-second post and abjure an opportunity to raise the level of discussion here, be mindful that you broke my heart. Never assume that a poor effort can be excused with popularity; true greatness reveals itself at moments entirely unheralded.
 
Scholar... I feel it is time to end the riddle and reveal something troubling about me - and I know it is something that several of us have secretly shared for years now. I'm personally very sorry for keeping you in the dark all that time and I hope that you will find it in your heart to forgive us for hiding our true selves from the rest of the group.
