That was kind of humorous. I got interviewed by this abrupt, stone-faced Russian guy. It took like 4 minutes altogether. His part took 20 seconds.

What job are you applying for?
What shift?
What salary do you expect?
Have you driven a Drexel forklift?

Okay do you have any questions?

So I sez, "I was looking up your company on the internet and I got an idea of the products you sell but there is not much about the corporate structure. Is this an international company?"

"Yes."

Okay then. I had a few other questions and dragged the pertinent info out of him but it was basically pretty humorous. I was halfway home and I glanced at my clock and it was still a couple minutes before the interview was actually scheduled to begin.

The exact opposite end of the interviewing spectrum from my 3 hour behavior-based grilling at Fedex.

I have no idea what my chances are. I'd actually really like to get this one, even more than yesterday's interview. We'll see.

Nuther interview in a couple hours.

I have not sir, no. I have operated damn near every kind of warehouse equipment and I am currently certified for counterbalance and reach trucks, but the Drexel Swingmast is a fairly specialized piece of equipment that you very seldom cross paths with.

It did not come across as a make-or-break issue. The guy did not seem shocked or put off by my answer (nor should he have been). As I told him, I could learn it in 3.4 seconds, no doubt.

If I am recalling my forum details correctly, that would be a bit of a commute.

In other news, no dice on the job I interviewed for yesterday. Talking about the one that I said I had a better than 50/50 shot at, that looked like it was going to be a lot of hours and a crappy commute. I got word that they picked someone else.

HOWEVER - in the strangest news of all, I got a call today from a woman from an agency asking me if I can start a job tomorrow. What I know of it sounds pretty good - but I only know what was on an outline from the job posting. Seems strange to get a call and an offer like that, like, half an hour after forwarding a resume. Makes me wonder, what's the catch? What am I missing? However I'm meeting with this woman in about an hour at a coffee shop down the street so I guess I will get things clarified.

Sounds like something an employment agency would do if they are short of bodies.

They are getting pressure from their client and need to fill the spot ASAP.

You may luck into something better if you do well at this gig.

Good luck.

I get that but it's not like they shouldn't already have a huge stack of resumes sitting there. It's a quality sounding job - a lot of shleps would apply for it. Why go for some guy before you've seen him or asked him a single question?

But yeah, maybe I am just in the right place a the right time. Maybe I am lucking out.

Or maybe it's all a bait-and-switch and they are actually looking for assembly line people. Wouldn't surprise me to be honest.

Anyway, no point speculating. I'll be zipping over there to see what she has to say shortly.

When I first started doing computer work, I went through an agency and they'd get me jobs that I really wasn't entirely qualified for yet. However, I was a quick learner and was able to prove myself on the job. I was able to progress pretty rapidly because of it. I don't think they get the volume of resumes that you'd imagine. They'd basically ask me if the job was something that I could handle. If I said yes, they'd setup an interview for me. And it didn't seem like I had much competition. They'd sell me and all I had to do was show up. I'd get a short term contract for a few months at a rate higher than most comparable long standing jobs, I gained valuable experience and references, and I'd hold out a few weeks afterward for another opportunity that gave me experience in other facets of IT. It worked out well. The economy was in a much better place at the time, however.

Well Bob's yer uncle - I have a job to go to tomorrow. It was no trap; it's a remarkably good-sounding job at above average pay.

I haven't set foot in the place yet so obviously I can't declare MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. But the pre-indications couldn't be much better.

I picked up the fixins for lunch on the way home. Gotta make a bag lunch. Haven't done that for awhile.

Although the place where I'm going to work is a bakery so who knows what kind of lunch-related fringe benefits may come out of that down the road?

Well. This is a weird feeling.
