Comedies typically put little effort into cinematography, sound and other artsy-fartsy stuff. :noonegivesashitmatty:

But yeah, the South Park movie is another borderline contender.

I understand this. Crappy acting too (see Dangerfield in Caddyshack). But if you put a high quality drama next to Airplane and pick the slapstick knee slapper 99, 90, or even 75 times out of a 100 isn't it better? Why would a person subject themselves to the "worse" option.

It's a lot like someone not attending a party or outing and claiming "I wanted to go, I just had xyz to do." NO! Deciding you prefer XYZ is the process of NOT WANTING to go. I understand sometimes people can have dual motivations, or in the case of movies changing tastes/moods. But by God, the movie you choose to give you pleasure 9/10 times is better than the other.

For sure. I'm with you and Cougs. I love Dazed and Confused and would rank it higher than a lot of dreadful but highly-regarded classics.

I've always felt a lot of "Meh" towards that movie for whatever reason. Is it a comedy? I don't think I've really ever laughed watching it.

I could watch Dumb and Dumber a million times over and still laugh. It's so simple yet so fucking genius.

For movies, the "classics" tend to evoke some sort of emotional response from the viewer. Sometimes, I'd rather be detached from a movie than emotionally involved. I might just not be in the mood to get involved like that. That emotional response also tends to have a lesser effect the more it's viewed. But how many times can you watch a guy get kicked in the nuts and laugh? :dunno: A lot.

Off the top of my head;

Airplane
Back to School
Boogie Nights
Borat
Bull Durham
Caddyshack
Dirty Rotton Scoundrels
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Eight Men Out
Fear and Loathing in LV
48 Hours
I'm Gonna Get You Sucka
The Jerk
Spaceballs
Spinal Tap
Stripes
Tommy Boy
Trading Places
Vacation
White Men Can't Jump

I watch em as an escape. Nothing wrong with the classics but I just want to relax.

Dumb and Dumber killed me the first time I saw it. I was literally laying in the aisle. Only movie to ever do that. I still like it, but it's not a Top 20 for me. Guess they are making another one with Daniels and Carrey.

Yeah I think there are some funny parts in Dazed and Confused but mostly it's supposed to be a timepiece of that era, lots of high school stereotypes, some decent dialogue, Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughay's best characters ever, A++ soundtrack, guess it always brings me back to high school for whatever reason though my era was 20 years later than the setting for the film. Plus I owned a 71 Nova in high school and loved driving that car...

But what if Dumb and Dumber WAS a drama?

Dazed and Confused is not a comedy. It's just a feel-good high school movie with a bunch of classic rock tunes. Reminds me of my own high school experience even though the movie is set 15 years earlier.

Every time I rent a Mustang I have to play Slow Ride on the stereo, just cause of that movie. It makes me happy.

Never watched more than 2mins of Dumb & Dumber. Looks retarded, in a bad way.

Dazed and Confused was basically Fast Times at Ridgemont High, set back in 1975 instead of 1981.
