Aggressive cow kills farmhand at north Okanagan ranch

CHERRYVILLE, B.C. A farmhand from the Northwest Territories has died in a strange accident on a ranch in B.C.'s north Okanagan.

The BC Coroners Service says 49-year-old Allen Powder died July 1 as he was transferring cattle from one corral to another at a ranch near Cherryville, north of Kelowna.

The Whitehorse resident was working with another man as they moved the animals.

One of the cows became agitated and aggressive and Coroner Larry Marzinzik says it butted the victim with its head.

The second man reports Powder was able to climb a fence and get out of the corral but collapsed steps later and could not be revived.

An investigation by WorkSafeBC and the coroner is continuing.

Making a bomb threat at an airport is no laughing matterespecially for a Venezuelan man had to pay the airport thousands of dollars for telling a gate agent he had explosives in his luggage.

The comment, which Dr. Manuel Alvarado later said was a joke, ended up costing him more than $89,000.

Today we are here basically because of a knucklehead who made a bomb threat back in October, said Lauren Stover with Miami International Airport. Alvarado, a prominent neurosurgeon from Venezuela, was forced to make out two checks; one payable to Miami Dade Aviation Department for $83,519 and another to the Miami-Dade Police Department in the amount of $5,653.19.

People make these stupid comments all the time and they think its cute and at this airport, if you want to be cute, I will show you what cute looks like, said MIA Director Emilio Gonzalez. You cost us money. Your stupid comments have an effect, it interrupted our operations, you inconvenienced our passengers and, you know what, youre going to write me a check.

Airport officials calculated they lost $106 a minute during the more than three-hour airport disruption. Its the first time MIA had been able to collect restitutions for false threats and are sending a clear message to anyone thinking of joking by making a bomb threat. I hope we dont have to do it again but if it happens again we will do it, again and again, until people understand this is not funny, Gonzalez said.

The comments made by Dr. Alvarado disrupted thousands of passengers, delayed flights and evacuated several terminals. The state attorneys office has agreed not to file additional charges as long as he paid his civil penalty which he did.

Jason Pierre-Paul injures hand in fireworks accident

Jason Pierre-Paul suffered a hand injury Saturday night while attempting to light fireworks.

Jason Pierre-Paul, the Giants two-time Pro Bowl defensive end, had his right index finger amputated Wednesday.

Jason Pierre-Paul wouldn't let Giants personnel see him in the hospital days after the team took a long-term, $60 million offer off the table.

Sneaking in to toboggan on the bobsled track. You shouldn't have done that.

The two teenagers who were killed tobogganing down the Olympic bobsleigh track in Calgary were twin brothers, their family said in a statement. They were 17-years-old.

Jordan and Evan Caldwell, along with six other young men, took an after-hours ride down the sliding track at Canada Olympic Park on Saturday morning, around 1:30 a.m. The boys crashed into a gate, killing the Caldwells and sending the other six to hospital.

We were reminded today that life is but a vapor. Life is precious, life is fragile, and we must redeem the time were given, the Caldwell family said in a statement.

Our boys Jordan & Evan were bright lights to all who knew them. We are grieving their loss but confident in their new home of heaven. Our brief 17 years with them were a gift: filled with much love, laughter, and fond memories, it said. They leave a huge void and will be sorely missed.

The statement was signed by Jason, Shauna, and Katie Caldwell.

A family member living in the Edmonton area said the two boys had great futures.

They were outstanding young men. They had straight-A averages and had scholarships to several universities, and they were just really fine boys. Everybodys very perplexed how this came to be, the relative, who asked not to be identified and was reached before the names were officially released, told The Canadian Press.

The sliding track at COP was in the 1988 Olympic Games and is still on the World Cup circuit. Elite athletes also use it for training in the winter. The boys, riding their own toboggan, crashed into a gate that separates the bobsled and luge tracks. Someone working security at Canada Olympic Park, known as COP, called in the emergency.

The six survivors were severely traumatized, Calgary Police Service Duty Staff Sgt. Paul Wyatt told reporters Saturday morning.

WinSport Canada operates COP. It has given Calgary Police Service its security tapes to determine how the boys accessed the track. COP also hosts a small ski hill, a large halfpipe, the remains of the ski jump towers used in the Olympics, and ice rinks.

Barry Heck, WinSports chief executive, said the operator is also going to conduct its own review but does not think there is a problem with a lack of security on the track.

We have robust security measures throughout the park and again safety is extremely important. We have a full time security staff that we employ and when the investigation is concluded we will better understand what happened, Mr. Heck said.

He said he doesnt recall any previous incidents like this one where someone broke in to use the track after hours.

Ive heard of incidents of people coming into the park. I do not know of any incidents of anyone being on the sliding track.

Seven ambulances responded to Saturday mornings tobogganing crash. Three of the survivors were transported to the Foothills Medical Centre while the other three went to Rockyview General Hospital. The teens suffered varying degrees of injury. As of Saturday afternoon, one remained in critical condition while the others were stable, CPS said.
