I think it's a decent system aside from the drawing of lots. Of course it is important to keep a fixed timetable of matches but it wouldn't be impossible to work out some system whereby the tied teams can actually play some kind of football to decide who progresses even if it's just an ad hoc penalty shootout.
 
Are you effing kidding me, what I read earlier about the goal diff? Eventually the way this sport is held, group somewhere is going to be all 1-1 ties, or even 0 - 0 ties, then they are just going to draw lots for the advancement. This is just another reason why I can't get into this sport, it is about as unamerican as it can be, just like the world wants it.

I don't think there is a scenario where there is going to be a tie for any of the qualification places - the only possibility is that if the USA and England both win, they would use the tiebreaker to see which team qualifies as group winners (USA would win that as of today since they have scored 2 more goals than England).

The competition started in 1930 and the first time that lots were drawn was in 1990 which I believe is the only time. Although there are no doubt better ways to deal with the stalemates, it's not something so common that it should affect your enjoyment of the competition.

both games end in a draw. Slovenia moves on with 5pts, Algeria out with 2. England and US have same rec and goal differential.
