In 1970, when Mays was in the latter stages of his career with the San Francisco Giants, he collided with teammate Bobby Bonds while both were attempting to catch a deep fly ball hit by Bobby Tolan of the Cincinnati Reds. The ball was hit perfectly between them in right-center field at Candlestick Park. Mays and Bonds arrived simultaneously, leaping into the air and colliding violently. They fell in a tangled mass on the warning track, with Mays knocked unconscious. Bonds then reached into Mays' glove and pulled out the baseball, revealing that the legendary Mays had made the catch despite the collision.
