Scholar I watched a documentary about pot the other day. It was all about how hemp is a great source for thread and how during the war they made rope out of it and stuff. It went on into more and more detail about the comparisons between different drugs, alcohol, cigs and pot.

I didn't become a convert and still can't stand the smell of the stuff but it was evident that there is a conspiracy to keep pot illegal.

very true.

did Woody Harrelson give up that fight yet?

There can be no other conclusion for someone who is able to look at the cannabis situation objectively, Wal. Tobacco and alcohol kill thousands of people each year, while cannabis has yet to produce a fatal overdose. We even outlaw hemp just to keep people from realizing the benefits of the plant which don't result in a "drug." We put people in jail just for possessing it, like it's inevitable that all potheads will go commit a crime as soon as they spark up, even though we know that to be a patently false premise.

The primary beneficiaries of this crusade are people involved in law enforcement, making sure that there is an ample supply of "criminals" to abuse to ensure their own job security. They've ceased to care about protecting people from crime, and are now out actively searching for it and even fabricating it when necessary and/or convenient. Some use discretion, others don't, and we tolerate it because we're too afraid to admit that it's been so long since the average American was responsible for his own safety, that we forgot how to protect ourselves!

Obviously I could go on all day about this, but I'm glad to hear that you see that the corruption starts with the people making the policy, and it's impossible for that not to infect the foot soldiers of domestic law and order.

Scholar, no doubt it can be argued that there is certain hypocrisy with a cop enforcing a law that he can’t totally agree with but a society without laws or enforcers of said laws would be a society that eventually become extinct.

When lawlessness ensues we have to police ourselves. This leads to vigilantism and society is left up to interpretation. This is a condensed argument but it covers the basics.

I agree with this - except the part about hypocrisy. I don't see any reason a cop needs to 100% agree with 100% of the laws he upholds. I don't expect anybody in any job to exist in a state lily white idealism about every aspect of it. People need jobs. The world is complicated. People do the best they can.

Society needs cops. I love cops and am very glad and grateful there are people willing to do it.

PS - I have no idea what all the hub bub here is about and I am not taking sides. Just speaking about cops.

PPS - I just noticed this is post #6666 for me. Cosmic.

Society needs cops.
No, we don't. I agree that society requires people charged with responding to lawlessness and crimes with victims, but we got along just fine for millennia before the concept of a standing police force to act as a deterrent to crime was advanced in the 18th century. Before that, every member of a society was charged with taking part in keeping order and calling for justice against crimes they had witnessed and the few people in law enforcement merely responded to those calls for action.

People today are lazy and unwilling to take part in that natural function, and that's precisely why I don't think they deserve such protection. Either get involved or GTFO, but don't go telling me that we need a cop in your neighborhood to protect your ass because you don't want to have to be ultimately responsibly for your own safety.

Just some food for thought, cops do much more than drug enforcement.

Speaking from a personal standpoint, there is nothing more sexy about my day to day activities than catching somebody breaking into a car at a park or day care center or being on a perimeter where we arrest someone who just smashed the rear slider of someones home and stole their belongings.

Listen, I've said it before and I'll say it again, with roughly 950,000 cops in the States it's inevitable that at least 50,000 have zero discretion, abuse their power and unfortunately slipped through the cracks.

come stay a weekend with me in memphis or archie where he lives in the chicago area...then you will sit back and say "goddamn, was i really dumb enough to think that we dont need cops" as long as you have people that want something for nothing and feel like the world owes them something, there is a need for law enforcement...FACT

policing weed, who knows...but i think the place would go mad if you legalized other drugs

Semi off topic. Look at this Rogie. New film on Raul Sexias coming out 4.21.11.

Up here in no mans land I've seen exactly 1 cop one time, it was an RCMP officer that cruised into the parking lot at the restaurant where I was eating
breakfast. He had a look around and left.

My experiences with rural police is much different than with big city ones.

do they have hall monitors in your quarters Plommer? when are quiet hours?

do they make you sign some big long list of do's and don'ts?

or is it like the wild west?

We have no police here on site, just some unarmed geeky looking security guys. I'm sure the cops would be called if there were problems as the security staff would be overmatched by most of the men here, there are some big muthafuckers here pal, I've met plenty of huge Ironworkers, covered in tatoos and quite intimidating looking.

I'd rather get beaten by a cop than face any of these dudes.

Arch, its an alcohol & drug free environment, the guys are here to make some money - and the trades guys make a shitload of dough.

Everyone I've dealt with here is courteous, respectful, and well behaved. I see no reason for it not to continue.

Remember too that this is Canada, not the US.
