How far is this French Quarter from say downtown? I know nothing about the area.

They are right next to each other. I've never really left the Quarter though. But if someone knew of something really cool Downtown, I'd definitely go.

I spend most of my time in search of neat hidden little bars. Stumbling around the streets taking in the sights. Keeping an ear out for great music, which is everywhere. Eating glorious food. When all else fails, hit up the casino.

Yes to street performers. Random little parades from time to time. You'll have locals who will just walk into a bar where you're taking in a game with a covered dish and start serving up homemade jumbalaya. Three more months!

Jackson Square

Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop (circa 1772) at the corner of Bourbon and St. Phillip Street claims to be the longest continuously operating bar in the States. At night, there are no lights...only candles
