I find it hard to argue with his contention that the Industrial Revolution changed humans in a sociological way that is at least partially incompatible with overall happiness. Our means of providing for ourselves materially are becoming more and more artificial, leaving us desperate for hobbies and recreational pursuits to give us that sense of accomplishment which was historically received from their vocation. It's a compelling theory for why clinical depression is most often observed in first-world populaces and not where life is hardest.
