NEW YORK -- The Chicago Cubs hope they've drafted a Great One.

Trevor Gretzky, the baseball-playing son of hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky, was selected in the seventh round Tuesday during the second day of the amateur draft.

The younger Gretzky knocks in runs -- not goals -- as a left-handed, power-hitting, California high school first baseman. And the jersey number he wore? Well, No. 99, of course.

He has a commitment to San Diego State, where he could play under baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn if he chooses not to sign with Chicago.

The Cubs also took a name from their past, drafting California high school outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr. in the 11th round. Shawon Sr. was the No. 1 overall pick by Chicago in 1982 and the cannon-armed shortstop played 18 big league seasons.

The sons of Ivan Rodriguez and Kevin Seitzer, and the great-nephew of Eddie Gaedel -- who's 6-foot-3, unlike his 3-foot-7 great-uncle who drew a walk in one of baseball's most famous publicity stunts 60 years ago -- were also among some familiar names called Tuesday.

Minnesota drafted Dereck Rodriguez, the son of the 14-time All-Star catcher, in the sixth round. The younger Rodriguez played center field and pitched for Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami.

Cameron Seitzer, a slugging first baseman for Oklahoma, was taken in the 11th round by Tampa Bay.

Valparaiso outfielder Kyle Gaedele -- his last name has an extra 'e' at the end -- was a sixth-round pick of San Diego. The highest-drafted player in school history, he hit .326 in three years with the Crusaders, with 17 home runs and 121 RBIs.

Bryce Harper's brother also went to Washington. South Carolina lefty Bryan Harper was drafted in the 30th round by the Nationals, who chose slugger Bryce with the No. 1 overall pick a year ago.

If Trevor made it to the big leagues, would he be the most prominent offspring of THE 2ND GREATEST NHL PLAYER EVER.... to make it "big" in another sport?

it must have killed Wayne to not see him make hockey #1

You're on Team Lemieux, eh?

no, I mean as a non REAL hockey fan and growing up in Pittsburgh I thought he was the greatest.

but I can say with 97% certainty now, that Wayne was the easily the greatest.

I only have a few reservations, which are basically due to ignorance of the sport as a whole, not seeing Wayne play in his prime, statistical, and team-ate related.

for instance.

I might be wrong, but back when Mario "Came Back" after the cancer and back thing, in 2001ish. didn't he still have an average of over 2.0 goals for his career? what was Wayne's?

when Mario scored over 200+ points in a season in the late 80's what kind of team did he have around him? How did that Compare to Wayne's over 200 point scoring teams? I really don't know. I mean I could look up the rosters, but I wouldn't know but 2-3 guys on either team...

Lemieux never had a 200-point season. 199. He had more than 2 points per game before he came back - he ended his career at 1.88 PPG (vs. 1.92 for Gretzky)

Mario was way more exciting to watch than Gretzky, but yeah, the numbers don't lie.

He was more exciting? why?

what HOF-ers were on Marios team during the 199 point stretch? I know Paul Coffey off hand but other than that I don't know.....

I hear somtimes that Wayne had tons of great guys around him..... but I know that when the Pens won those stanley cups they had amazing guys like coffey, stevens, rechi, brown,

Coffey also played with Wayne Gretzky in Edmonton.

He (Lemieux) was more exciting? why?

He was more exciting to watch if you were a Frenchman because Lemieux was from Quebec and many of his biggest fans also happened to be from Qbek. Since Gretzky was the better player its the way the Qbekkers justify things in their minds.

"Oh yeah, Gretzky may have all the records and more Cups and a longer career but Lemiuex was more fun to watch because he is from Quebec"

Frenchie logic, remember these are the same fokks that think Canada ain't good enough for them and that they should be their own island.

You dig?

I'm showing my ignorance here

but I remember Mario always trying to score right off the face-off, and during his comeback and finally did it. Have many other players done this? is it tried that much?

Look at highlight clips of Gretzky... they're all milestone goals/points. Lemieux has a ton of classic goals where he makes the other team look like a bunch of retards.

Yeah those milestone/records pale in comparison when compared to making opponents look like retards.

I agree, Lemieux should have won an award for making opponents look like retards. Gretzky won actual awards.
