PLEASANT GROVE -- A young Pleasant Grove man was arrested for allegedly using his cell phone camera to record women using a restroom where he worked. He's also facing charges for manufacturing child pornography.
Capt. Michael Smith of the Pleasant Grove Police Department says 19-year-old Michael Hall had worked at a hardware store on Main Street for about a year, and there he made a small hole in the ceiling tile in the women's restroom where he would hide his cell phone and set it to record video.
"It was a cell phone. He had disabled it and was using it just as a recording device," said Smith. "He would just turn it on and leave it in there for hours at a time and come back and retrieve it when it looked like the coast was clear."
Hall was caught when a customer using the restroom noticed the hole and thought she could see what looked like a small camera. She reported it to the store manager who found the phone and then called police.
Smith says 10 different victims were recorded by the phone. Police searched Hall's home computer and also found pictures of a nude 13-year-old girl. The pictures were of a girl Hall knew. Police say he had secretly taken them at a residence without her knowledge.
"I think he realized it was bad but didn't realize it was as serious as it is," said Smith. "He's facing felony charges for what he's done.
Police plan on doing a forensic analysis of Hall's computer to see if there is anything on there they missed in the original search.
"A very rough way to start your adulthood," said Smith. "He's got some long days ahead of him."
Hall is in the Utah County Jail on nine counts of class A misdemeanor voyeurism, one count of third-degree felony voyeurism and 14 counts of second-degree felony child pornography manufacturing.
