T'was all about the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix when I started playing some 20 years ago.
When I started up, the main thing was Gordon Lightfoot - mainly because my grade 6 teacher who ran the guitar club, was a huge fan. So that's what he focused on (to his eternal credit). But it was a natural. Acoustic guitar songs of increasing difficulty. The fact they had educational and cultural value was something I did not come to fully appreciate until later.
By the time I got to my teens, Neil Young was fully asserted. You would meet up with a new acquaintance and get out the acoustic guitars and reach that, "Okay what do we play," moment - you could be pretty sure you had some Neil Young in common. If he was a beginner - Helpless. If he was working on his picking - The Needle and the Damage Done. If he was learning harmonica - Heart of Gold. If things were getting political - Southern Man.
I love Neil Young regardless of my guitar playing but those are the memories.
