Considering the large contingent of both Canadians and southern Americans here, I thought it might be interesting to hear your thoughts, positive or negative about Neil Young.

I consider his best work to be 1971's Harvest.

Damn he is an ugly fucker.

Neil Young is an icon for me. It's hard to put into words the significance of Neil Young, the feeling I have for him.

I'm sure a lot of has to do with being a guitar player. All young Canadian guitar players learn some Neil Young to go with their Gordon Lightfoot. But it is much deeper than that.

I have loved so much of his music. From Buffalo Springfield to CSNY to Zuma to Harvest to Comes a Time to Rust Never Sleeps and much more. It has been a big part of the soundtrack of my life for so long.

It's odd. I want to say it has something to do with him being Canadian but it has been decades since he's lived in Canada. But still, he does get some Canada points. I actually find his lyrics to be conspicuously awkward at times. Some of his lyrics are very good too. Anyway there is nothing I can do. He just has a whole lot of songs that can stop me in my tracks.

I don't think even his biggest fan would try to claim he has a spot-on voice. I think the word most fans would settle on would be haunting. He's in that camp with Dylan and Leonard Cohen of guys who are definitely not going to be accused of hitting every note and either it works for you or it doesn't.

I take it I was over-reaching when I said "all young Canadian guitar players . . ."

Perhaps I would have done better to say, "many Canadian acoustic guitar players of a certain age . . ."

I am a big Cohen fan and yes his vocals are limited to say the least. Guy is a lyrical genius though. Neil Young's lyrics never appealed to me. I tired to get into it, but couldn't.
