Kopitar is Slovenian. I would suspect that their national teams which train together would be better than the collection of NHL ers/minor leaguers they stick together.
I get the impression they are trying to make a farce of this tournament in the similar way they did with the recent All Star game/events.

Wouldn't their national team consist of players from European leagues? The only farce is thinking that players just dedicate themselves to a national team when real money is made in the NHL, KHL, and euro leagues. National pride doesn't pay the bills.

Some announcements from Canada regarding the 2016 World Cup of Hockey which is a bit over a year away.

St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong will serve in that same role for Team Canada. His management team will also including Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray, Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin, Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland and Los Angeles Kings assistant general manager Rob Blake.

So those are the people who get to pick from a totally, amazingly, incredible talent pool, then have their every move scrutinized and second-guessed by every Canadian who has ever heard of frozen water.

The far more interesting choice (IMO) is still to come: head coach.

On the list of best-on-best tourneys, Mike Babcock has won gold in the last two. That's good. He is willing to go again and is obviously a top candidate.

Don't know if his ridiculous new NHL contract helps, hinders or is irrelevant to his chances.

Worth noting: multi-Cuppers Joel Quenneville and Darryl Sutter are also Canadian.

It is next September.

I believe the future is totally up in the air. No predicting what the Olympics may want. You can go back to post 1 and see how often they used to have them before it joined the Olympics in 1998.

Fair guess, whether it is the Olympics or not, every 3 or 4 years.

I find it slightly humorous that the Canadian General Management is a 5 person team. They could appoint me and I would probably come up with the same group of players.

What do you think guys? Duncan Keith or not Duncan Keith? Do we put Toews on the team? Do we talk to Carey Price or not bother? Anyone feeling like Shea Weber is more trouble than he's worth?

I mean sure, there is always debate about the names at the end of the roster. Some people might favor one completely outstanding player over another completely outstanding player. The Olympic team might have ended up with Claude Giroux instead of Marty St. Louis.

I feel like we still would have been okay.

5 General Managers, this team.

Mike Babcock to coach Team Canada at 2016 World Cup

Mike Babcocks track record of success - he coached Team Canada to back-to-back gold medals at the Olympics in Vancouver and Sochi - has landed him another run as the man behind the bench for Team Canada.

Babcock will be named head coach of Team Canada at the 2016 World Cup, Sportsnet is saying. A press conference is scheduled for Thursday to make a formal announcement.

Team Canada has named 16 players to their roster for World Cup 2016. No Connor McDavid. He is in fact on the under 23 North American team. Here's what Canada got at this point:

G Corey Crawford, Chicago Blackhawks

G Braden Holtby, Washington Capitals

G Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens

D Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings

D Duncan Keith, Chicago Blackhawks

D Marc-Edouard Vlasic, San Jose Sharks

D Shea Weber, Nashville Predators

F Jamie Benn, Dallas Stars

F Patrice Bergeron, Boston Bruins

F Jeff Carter, Los Angeles Kings

F Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins

F Ryan Getzlaf, Anaheim Ducks

F Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars

F Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning

F John Tavares, New York Islanders

F Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks

FWIW here are the first 16 for Team North America (which is this dopey under 23 squad they are doing).

G John Gibson, Anaheim Ducks

G Connor Hellebuyck, Manitoba Moose Winnipeg Jets hold NHL rights

G Matt Murray, Pittsburgh Penguins

D Aaron Ekblad, Florida Panthers

D Seth Jones, Columbus Blue Jackets

D Ryan Murray, Columbus Blue Jackets

D Morgan Rielly, Toronto Maple Leafs

F Sean Couturier, Philadelphia Flyers

F Jack Eichel, Buffalo Sabres

F Johnny Gaudreau, Calgary Flames

F Dylan Larkin, Detroit Red Wings

F Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche

F Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers

F J.T. Miller, New York Rangers

F Sean Monahan, Calgary Flames

F Brandon Saad, Columbus Blue Jackets

Rosters aren't final. Canada only showing 4 defencemen there. I believe both of our last two gold medals had the pair of guys from St. Louis, Pietrangelo and Boouwmeester. I don't feel like looking up spelling right now.

Subban was the 7th guy on the team in Sochi.

I don't know the rules of these rosters. That's only 16 guys so they are obviously going to add. There has to be some provision to change guys because people can get hurt and there is a long time before the tournament.

I don't know what's going on but there it is.
