So I got my first traffic violation.

Speeding.

65mph in a 40zone.

Also dinged me for expired registration.

Was spose to renew in March. I was never notified, cause my Nissan financing in CA ignored the TN dmv request for title.

Coming from a police state in CA I was worried, and annoyed, cause they fuck you dry no lube there.

TN is a bit confusing figuring out the rules. Website is wonky.

Decided to do old fashioned way and drive to all of the facilities.

Speeding ticket costs $100 with 2 points on record.

You can get up to 12 points before suspension. And points expire after a year.

Or

Pay $140 an take online traffic school where points are taken off.

What should I do?

I would do 140 n school. From my experience in NJ your insurance will go up more than 40 bucks from the points unless different in Tenn? I think you got off easy Blitty only 100 for going that much over the limit.

How is it reduced fine?

$100 no school vs $140 with school.

Suppose the big question is how much the up charge from insurance ends up being in the long run from points.

Plead not guilty. Show up at the hearing with a good explanation as to why you were not speeding THAT much and explain your registration woes.

Also, was the previous speed limit changed clearly posted? Go check that it wasn't covered with overgrowth, take photos. Demand the latest calibration records for the radar gun.

Cops count on people not calling them out and they fuck up paper work all the time. Or, if they schedule a day to do all their hearings and they miss it (sick kid, double booked, just dont feel like it), everyone gets off.

But seriously prob most +ev to do the school. @MrMonkey is right, 2 points will cost you more than $40/yr on insurance.
