Yeah I saw 50m/ year. That solves cash flow, but still, he gave up hundreds of millions to play there.
How do you mean? Hundreds of millions due to California's high tax rates or due to not taking the money frontloaded so he could invest it?Yeah I saw 50m/ year. That solves cash flow, but still, he gave up hundreds of millions to play there.
I was talking about the latter and relative to a standard annual contract (who knows if that was available). At 5% discount rate (also the investment rate):How do you mean? Hundreds of millions due to California's high tax rates or due to not taking the money frontloaded so he could invest it?
Yeah, that's what I figured. Crazy for sure. And doesn't even seem to affect cap hit, could have deferred/spread out much more evenly.I was talking about the latter and relative to a standard annual contract (who knows if that was available). At 5% discount rate (also the investment rate):

Baseball contracts are guaranteed, so it doesn't matter what happens with his elbow. Pretty sure his agent won't make 700m+ endorsements.HIS AGENT WILL END UP MAKING MORE THAN HIM. HE HAS ELBOW PROBLEMS AND WON’T BE PITCHING MUCH LONGER.. HORRIBLE DEAL ALL OVER..
I tend to agree with you. But marketing opportunities in la vs Orange County have to be better. I don’t think enough to make up for the loss in salary but he Ohtani will be presented with more opportunities if he wants them. From a straight financial perspective it's a terrible contract. Even if the alternative was only 50m/yr for 10 years he gave up 100m.
But it's going to go down as the most significant home town (or cross town) discounts of my lifetime. He quite literally gave up hundreds of millions to stay where he wanted and to help make that team better in the "short" term, and not by a little bit.
Not what I said. You don't like players giving discounts to make the team better?I agree it’s a horrible deal on all aspects.
Yeah, im more with you on the last part. I don't think this moves the needle. Dude's marketing opportunities are astronomical wherever he goes. Hell, I bet 75% of his off the field revenue comes from Japan anyhow. And of the domestic piece I bet 1/3 of that is national. We're not talking about a guy getting 10k to sign baseballs at a used car dealer here (though that would be hilarious).I tend to agree with you. You are assuming the only way to monetize Ohtani is based off of on the field performance. I would take the stance Ohtanis true value is greater off the field than on the field to the dodgers.I'm not an attorney.
The guy is very prone to injury. Not a good investment ..
I had a well reasoned response and tossed it b/c I'm afraid of the 3% I'm just getting mercilessly trolled.I am enjoying how Tron Boner and Tully are debating the nuances of the deal and it's greater implications and Shorty is like "yes exactly what you guys said, this is trash."
I can’t see many players ever agreeing to a deal like this. I can see a few teams trying to pressure players into one though. I wonder if Ohtani proposed this to other teams and they balked.I’m happy for Ohtani, my hometown Los Angeles and the Dodgers but I’m definitely vexed at what this does to “parity” in MLB
