Could Saskatchewan be Canada’s economic Kevlar vest?

While most of the country is feeling economically crunched with fewer job opportunities and budgets blanketed in red — Saskatchewan is booming.

A boom that could prove to help protect the country against a shaky global economy.

“We have what the world wants right now, not just with respect to natural resources, but also in terms of agriculture,” said Premier Brad Wall.

Wall highlights a 7.7 per cent growth in exports — the highest rate of growth in the country between Nov. 2011 and Nov. 2012 — saying the province is quite blessed to rely on multiple resources rather than just one.

Currently, Saskatchewan is a major producer of potash, uranium, oil, natural gas and is a world leader in pulse crops.

In late 2012 the Conference Board of Canada reported that Saskatchewan is poised to have the fastest growing economy in 2013 and 2014, which boils down to two things: More money and more jobs.

“It’s a great quality of life here,” said Wall. “When you take a look at the rest of the country, it’s very competitive from a cost of living standpoint, and there are jobs here that we can offer and jobs that are available right now.”

With growth comes growing pains — something Wall said his government is working on keeping at a minimum with major investments in infrastructure and appropriate tax exemptions.

Perhaps, most importantly, the boom is nowhere near slowing down.

“It’s continuing…that’s the first thing other Canadians should know; is that this is real what’s happening here in Saskatchewan,” said Wall.

So everything grinds to a halt during the winter? I thought they kept on working like those shows in the Discovery channel.

Winter is the busiest time of year for drilling, but winter is over, spring (April, part of May) is very slow as the roads are closed to heavy trucks (road bans) until the thaw/flooding has stopped.

I'm in contact with a recruiter in Winnipeg that has offered a "rock star" job, driving a tanker for a 3 month contract term in Manitoba, based out of Brandon. Basically delivering ammonia to farms in SW Manitoba. They put you up in a hotel, pick you up by taxi every day and take you to the factory in Brandon to load your truck and do your deliveries.

This may be perfect for me. My plan is to deliver ammonia for the spring and early summer in Manitoba with accommodations provided and then return to Saskatchewan in the summer when the rigs are all back online.

Thats the plan, if it works out that way is the $64K question.

$64K for 3 months work?

$64K for 3 months work?

no. just a term "the $64,000 question".

I *could* make $120k over a 12 month period, but I'm not motivated/interested in working the long days required to do so. Lots of guys do though.

I'm quite happy working for $1200 - $1500 a week.

I'll take a smaller paycheque and have some time for other things. Work to live, not live to work.

Saskatchewan is a lot more fun in the summertime.

Hooker scene in Winnipeg?

I'm only familiar with the streetwalker scene, and my experience is very limited. I have never been to a massage parlour in Winnipeg, don't even know where they are located.

The hookers in Winnipeg I saw looked mostly like drug users.

I mainly frequent the massage joints in Toronto, and there are LOTS of asian run joints here. LOTS!

My preference is not asian broads though, I prefer Polish, Ukrainian, Russian etc. most of these women have only been in Canada a few years.
