So as you know, I just recently started with weights...I am not trying to bulk up...I am trying to tone/increase metabolism etc.

For some dumb reason I told my trainer I wanted to go to 2x a week 1 hour each. I am a complete beginner with all of this stuff and after each session I am sore for days. I am still sore from Monday today. I can just today straighten my right arm out, but it hurts.

Is this too much for me as a beginner? How often do you guys go? every day? I can do cardio all week long but this is new territory.
When you are doing pushups on a bar deal and your arms are shaking so bad you cannot even finish last one with good form, isn't this a sign you should probably stop?

I'm afraid this gal is going to kill me today because I challengenged her suggestion for half hour once a week for now,...This will be our first hour long workout today. The half hour workouts are killing me. I have done 3 of those.

I'm more scared than Bacon in a snowstorm.

I am happy that despite highly increased caloric intake over the holidays I have gained zero weight and mostly have just been doing the weight stuff. How much of an increase in percentage of metabolic rate is possible? I know I'm not lifting like you guys (nor would I want to but I want to stick with this... I don't feel like one or two days in between is enough though.
I assume it will get easier.

I am not sure about all these squats though. Won't those make my ass bigger?

Sorry for wordinesss....I know you all like to talk about the gym stuff though so figure I'm ok..

If I were ranting in 2014 this would be one.

Just got text from trainer. Car in shop til 2 pm. Can't make our appointment..needs to reschedule. This is like the 4th issue I have had with this girl...one more and I'm requesting new trainer. Part of me is pissed, but part of me is relieved. Guess it will just be a cardio day.

More time for coffee now. SF is a not a large town. I'm sure the car people could have brought her to work. wth.

I swear she is reading these posts. Just sent another text. Took car to shop in Sioux City and was supposed to get ride back but apparently is now not able to. Ray Ray...meet me at the gym and show me how it's done.

1 hour workouts are too long
30 minute (high intensity no loafing around in between sets) 4 times a week will get you the results you want faster.

And you'll also burn more calories post workout (because you'll be working out 4 times a week instead of 2)

Squats will not make your ass bigger.

Women thinking that resistance training will make them bulkier is an epidemic.

It's all about the amount of weights you're doing and the reps.

Dump this trainer. No room for flaky trainers in your life.

God Bless

Thanks Traft. I really can't do 4x a week due to my schedule though.

I think she has given me too heavy of weight to start (imo) because she is a power lifter type and has been doing it since high school.

I hate to dump her, but I know what you are saying. I hate flaky people. ...will give her one more chance but then I'm talking to the training manager. I am trying to work hard before my trip so I can enjoy myself there and can't afford missed sessions. Part of it is my difficult schedule I'm sure, but if it doesn't work for her, she should have referred me to someone else.

it is incredibly hard for a woman to get "bulky" Unless you are born with Mesomorphic genes or have alot of steroids, working out with weights for a woman will not get a woman bulky unless she commits 4-5+ years TRYING to do that in all aspects of her lifestyle. even then, she might only gain 12-15 lbs of muscle, and i'm sure she'd lose the same amount or more of fat easily and looks slimmer in clothes.

your muscle soreness "DOMS" will be reduced as you get into it a few weeks.

60 mins two times per week seems ineffective. I mean it is way better than nothing, but 3-4x a week for shorter time period.

If gym travel is part of the issue, learn from this trainer for a month or so, then do some youtube research and places like bodybuilding.com and do stuff at home for 15-30 mins and do less or zero with a trainer

You're post is rather hard to decipher your question.

She's probably having you do compound movements. Those being olympic lifts or deadlifts, squats, benchpress. At lower weights these are great to get the body used to the new movements/balancing that will require moving heavier weights through those motions.

The time it takes is too generic of a question to answer. Everyone has different goals and different bodies and different workouts. To ask for an exact time is asinine.

Well obviously FF I know everyone has different goals etc...but I guess the generic question is, since again, 4x a week for weights will not happen..it literally can't. so then the question becomes... Should I do 2x30 min or 2x60 min per week. I don't know if you are saying 60 min is too long because I am a beginner or for anyone. Obviously I assume she will cater the workout to my beginner status as much as possible, but if you guys only do 30 min of stuff, then I don't want to trying to do an hour only just because I can only go 2x a week.

Sorry you had a problem deciphering my "assanine" question FF, but the others seemed to do ok with understanding it. Thank you Traft, Ray Ray Archie.

Also I only plan to be with the trainer for the equivalent of 10 hours ..at least that is my plan. The only reason I was paying to do it in the first place was to get in best possible shape before Cabo, since I will probably be eating/drinking more than usual there. I have found some youtube at home workouts that I can use to supplement on the off days.

Thanks guys.

My gut feeling is two 30 min workouts per week would be better for you than 60 min

i'm assuming you are doing a pretty quick pace with circuits or at least under 60 second breaks.

you mentioned powerlifter background for her, so i'm hoping she is not like some of the old school guys I see doing 10 sets of a power move with 5-8 mins rest in between movements.

i'm assuming you are doing a pretty quick pace with circuits or at least under 60 second breaks. Not really...Because she is having to show me how to use the machines it is not all that quick paced. I mean, we're not lollygagging but I don't feel like are going nuts either.

No and I don't want to pay for all that downtime!

Oops answered part of your question in the quote by mistake.

I'm getting a pretty good workout today blasting tunes and dancing around the house while I'm cleaning. And it's more fun.

she does have you taking breaks that long?

does she know you want to get fit and healthy and look good in a swimsuit and NOT compete in a lifting competition?

weird

does she have credentials? I know they are easy to come by, but still, seems like this broad might only train people the way she likes to train and with HER goals in mind

ah ok just read the answered part in quotes

can you ask her to do a machine free workout.

using bodyweight and small dumbell movements only?

that way you can take what you learn and use it at home. unless you plan to use this gym without paying for her tutelage for the forseable future

She actually did give me a simple workout for home with light weights and bands when I did the introductory 4 week thing with her before started the "real" training. I was the one who actually told her I wanted to do the machines. I can supplement at home. I just have to motivate.

I know. I am beginning to see that. I mean I expected we would spend some time going over specific goals and body parts I would like to work on etc... Also I wanted to incorporate some different cardio things that I don't normally do like on the rowing machine etc but she (probably rightly) feels like I can do the cardio on my own...there's a whole other deal where I originally bought 10 1/2 hour sessions on her recommendation and then I found out that the extra half our was only an extra 7 dollars so I figured even if she is just standing over me yelling me to stick with it on the stairstepper or something it would be worth it. It was a whole big deal and I eventually had to get sales involved because she wasn't wanting to do that...but I wanted the biggest bang for my buck and the price difference was negligible for the extra time. She led me to believe that the cost of 1/2 hour sessions was equal to half or slightly more than half the cost of 10 hour sessions...not even close. That was the first thing that pissed me off. She's ok. I wouldn't pick her again, but not sure I want to start over with someone else. But she's definitely only has one strike left. Then I'm gone. Either asking for someone else or my money back on unused sessions.

we should do some sort of workout motivation thread/challenge, to help us keep one another accountable.

we can use GameLive Points to help motivate us.

like if Wally posts a vid of him doing 10 burpie/squat thrusts i'll pay him 100,000 Gamelive points

we need to motivate Teela too!

pretty soon she needs to look like this

#NO Excuses!

Great Idea Arch. hahahaha Is that that woman who got all the shit for the "No Excuses" thing? OH duh....I see now it is. Lol. I mean, good for her, but still...fok her.

you will get over some of the soreness... cardio and stretching after workouts helps and stretching in the mornings... you arent going to bulk anything and you still need to be eating on a caloric deficit ... archie is so right, its crazy how women get the impression that if they lift, they will get bulky like men... hugh misconception...you wont

i go 5-6 days a week and like the other guys, hammer 1 big group per workout, but i will tell you that if i were in your shoes, i would make sure to do abs, arms and lunges the 2-3 days a week that you are at home all day...you will get a little stronger, but you arent really going to see a change in your body until your diet and cardio are in check and you start to lose some weight (if thats one of the main goals)

archie, how big is your fatass these days? are you going to get ripped again soon?
