Senco you coach now? That's fucking cool man wow. The more coaching stories the better imo I don't think I'd have the patience for it.
Actually had a little jammy jam with Cami last night me on geetar and harp Cami can sing and I cannot
it's early yet but we will share when it's not terribly awful (which I don't see ever happening but we will try)
think I'm gonna tone it down a notch next game... kinda got feeling I should just sit on bench and let kids run round with no direction after last game.
however we played most talented, stacked team holding to 9 pts when rest of games they scored 20+ pts a game blowing out opponents.
we lost 9-4
but my hollering is nothing negative at all.
instead trying to teach during game and speaking over the parents is only way to get their attention with every other parent, relative in gym screaming also.
then 1 kid literally falls asleep on bench does the head goes limp, head bob and wakes up with a " where the fuk am I at look "
and possibly might be overloading them with things better suited for older kids to learn.
couple set plays to run for both zone and man defense... but simlar pick and roll --- pass or shoot play
which if opponent plays man D our team goes into panic mode and game becomes a PE class resembling court of out of control kids playing a mix of bball, dodgeball, and rugby.
in other words I have became humbled and good chance outcoached by the " what I thought were clueless verteran rec dad coaches" that
used the 4 practices before games we all got ( and no more practice during season) to teach 1/2 court traps, box in 1 defense to shut down my super talented point guard.
granted rest of coaches played the system I knew nothing about being 1st yr... such as they all put holds on 3 to 4 kids before the draft using the assistant coach being a parent angle or the brothers same team, and the ride together request some had.
maybe consequence those kids put on hold happened to be most talented, skilled kids in age group???
so next game its either
1. chill and preach have fun even if most of them rather stand round and watch game while on the court or
2. do as I did last yr with older son once coach asked for my help and use all possible ways as a coach to win...
ala,,, call timeouts and tell kids foul when late in game and its close
show proper foul technique to not give opponent easy shots, layups... a hard foul but going for ball , send the 7 yr old to the line instead of letting em have lay up attempt. right? wrong???
3. give a lil tap on elbow when opponent pulls up for jumper in front of ya
4. when PG gets trapped by 2-4 kids as soon as crossing 1/2 court, picks up dribble, instead of panicking and chucking ball. get aggressive and grip ball w/ elbows extended outwards and use the pivot swiftly which may accidentally deliver a solid elbow to a chin, nose of defender??? make em think twice next time they trap ----
guaranteed, my HS coach taught me that as way to tame the over zealous teams that use physicality, size, and strength as a attempt to intimidate my at the time undersized, strength challenged HS physique playing the point. and it worked first time, boys nose hit me in elbow with some velocity resulting in a nose getting shifted a few degrees towards 1 side
